Battle of Delirus Germanii

  • *The Battle of Delirus Germanii(May 24-25 36 BC or 717 AUE)** was fought on May 24, 36 BC between Romans and allied Germans under the command of Julius Caesar and Gaius Asinius Pollio and Germans under the chiefs Brevonus and Friedius. It took place at the site Draesidium, which is called Delirus by historians.

Opening Stages

The battle started out with an attack on Caesar's back by

berserkers under the command of Friedius.

This proves to be a distraction, as Brevonus attacks the Romans' right flank. Despite that Caesar was wounded, he was able to rally his troops to repel the assault. And the Germans retreat. During this time the army constructs fortifications and sends a message to Pollio for help.

The next day

The second attack comes 16 hours later consists of the Germans attacking from two different sides, forcing Caesar to retreat to the south. Caesar narrowly defeats a third attack. Caesar launches an assault when the Germans appear to be retreating, and is ouflanked. Luckily Pollio arrives as he is about to be routed, and annhilates Friedius' force. After Brevonus swiftly turned around, Pollio faked a retreat, causing Brevonicus to be met with a hail of arrows. Eventually, Caesar helps encircle him. The battle lasts for two more hourse before the battle is over. Brevonicus is executed.

The Afftereffects

The Battle of the Delirii Germanii would prove to be the last major battle of the Germanic campaign and perhaps the one most hard-fought. In the end, it was likely Pollio who saved the day with his innovative tactics. Several more months would be spent subjagating smaller tribes, finishing up ny October, but the decisive battles were over.
