Treaty of Washington 1906
The Russo-Japanese War comes to an end with the Treaty of Washington DC, signed on January 12 1906. Russia withdraws all of its troops from Manchuria, transfers its lease of Port Arthur to Japan, and cedes Vladivostok and all of Sakhalin to Japan. Japan's influence in Manchuria and Korea is recognized. Many ‘in the know’ behind the scenes credit Roosevelt for convincing the Tsar to resume negotiations. Roosevelt himself is dissatisfied with the treaty, fearing it gives too much to the Japanese, disrupting the balance between the two nations that he believes would benefit the USA in the Pacific.
