South Dakota Class Battleships

The South Dakota class battleship was a series of four battleships of the United States Navy which served during the Global War. Following the pattern of US Battleship design this class went to four triple turrets from the five twins of the New Mexico Class. Speed was increased but they maintained the focus on firepower and armour. With the completion of these ships the US was at par with the Japanese and British designs of the 1920's.

All ships were commissioned in late 1922. All ships served in the Global War, with the South Dakota being sunk on the Battle of the Marshalls. The remaining ships were upgraded in the late 1940's and served on the Pacific for the rest of their careers. The three remaining ships of the class were sunk during the Three-day War of August 1967.
