Turkey

A country straddling Europe and Asia. Whether it is one or t'other is a matter for perpetual debate. Formerly the Ottoman Empire, although Abdul Hadi Pasha will now shout at me for claiming the two are in any way synonymous. Modern Turkey is a secular republic with freedom and democracy, and the army beats up anyone who disagrees.

'Carving the Turkey' is a term for the partition of the Ottoman Empire.

Turkey is also a North American bird which is eaten at Thanksgiving. Benjamin Franklin put forth the turkey as a candidate for national bird (well, so goes the legend - at least he thought it'd be better than the bald eagle). It's so called because Europeans in the 17th century assumed anything exotic must come from Turkey.
