Historically composed of three major lands : Slavonia, Croatia and Dalmatia. Former part of the Kingdom of Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, of a nasty Nazi-approved and Ustasha-led state and of Tito's Yugoslavia. Nowadays an independent republic. After the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, it started rebuilding its economy, especially the well-developed tourism industry in Dalmatia. A local naval power of sorts in the Adriatic (not too hard, since it owns most of the eastern coastline of said sea). It joined the EU on the 1st of July 2013.
