WI:Iran Hostage Crisis

They die miserably?
Hello!
A handful of people, with NO weapons against a mob of fanatics with AK47s?
Seriously?

After which Jimmy Carter is free to deal with the matter as he sees fit. A massive airstrike in Iran is not out of the question and would be strongly supported by the US population . It would likely boost the chances of his re-election if he carried out such an attack.

What if the hostages attempted to take back the embassy from the Iranian students? What would have happened?
Not even possible. The best option is a few more people are in the consulate section and make it to other embassies and get smuggled out by the CIA and Canadians.

Retaking the embassy is an ASB level event. It wasn't even planned for.

A handful of unarmed people, in a foreign capital far from home, cannot hold an embassy complex, period.

They almost certainly would have died and this would be the foremost terrorist event burned into the American psyche until 9/11. This would absolutely poison relationship between the US and Iran to this day; there would almost certainly not be any form of rapprochement with the current Iranian government.

On a related note, it probably would not have taken until 2012 to make this movie since the "Canadian Caper" would be much more important in a historical sense because these would likely have been the only embassy staff to not be massacred.
