On May 18th of 1980, thousands of protesters took to the streets to protest the military government that had overtaken Korea after another coup d' tat. This caused entire cities to riot and hundreds, if not thousands, died during these protests.
What if the situation escalated further, with army units and police units defecting to help the protesters, causing a national crisis, and North Korea saw it as a chance to invade? Would it plausibly start WW3? Could the Cold War escalate further from that point on?
