In 330 BC, after the disastrous defeat at Gaugamela, Darius III fled into the mountainous regions of Media, entrusting the defence of Parsa to the satrap Ariobarzanes, who failed to stop Alexander the Great despite putting up valiant resistance. A group of conspirators led by Bessus, satrap of Bactria and distant relative to Darius III, seized the Achaemenid king and threw him into an oxcart, wounding him with javelins before fleeing. What if the conspiracy had been uncovered and Bessus executed? Now this would imply that there is anybody left loyal to Darius III at this point, let's say it's the Greek mercenaries who do the job. Darius had been defeated already and would probably surrender alongside many of the satraps and nobles, meaning Alexander doesn't have to chase Bessus throughout much of the Upper Satrapies and doesn't go battle in India. What changes would result from this? Do the Wars of the Diadochi still go as OTL?
