Sharon was pushing a peace deal with Nixon-to-China style zeal and purpose.
Sharon knew how to handle Hamas: Whack the individual leaders until the "martyrs" begged him to stop.
Sharon could tell the settlers to f--- off as no one else could. He did so with the Gaza withdrawal, and was getting ready to do so on the West Bank.
Sharon had the reputation for being a "crazy" person but he handled security concerns with precise, measured actions. (This was completely unlike successor Ehud Olmert, who responded to crises with overblown and pointless crude measures featuring the blowing up of civilian infrastructure in Gaza and then Lebanon, absolutely stupid and pointless.)
Sharon was working overtime to provide the region the mother of all historical legacies. I was excited... and I say that his being removed from office was a tragic loss.
