So how do you use the internet or whatever to make great maps? Thanks

Well if you are looking for programs to make maps there are a few good free ones:

MS Paint - simple, already included on most computers

Paint.NET - supports layers and has the ability to create many neat effects, much like Photoshop, free. getpaint.net

GIMP - another free layer supporting editor. About the same level as Paint.NET, but harder to use in my opinion.

Search this forum for 'tutorial'. There are a couple with suggestions here.

Grab a base map from the Blank Map thread and start experimenting.
