What about, This Land is your land this land is my land whatever the politics of Woody Guthrie it is now sung at Republican conventions less a couple of verses from the original. God Bless America whether it is religious or not is nauseatingly twee and as a diest I feel it will go unheard. I prefer to original words to the Battle Hymn of the American Republic although they may well not be popular in parts of the South where John Brown is regarded as a terrorist. The Battle Cry for Freedom also fails for that reason.

Given that I can't vote for Woody Guthrie's unofficial anthem I quite like My Country Tis of Thee but is it because I am a Brit or because of my sense of irony. But for the War of 1812 you may well have had another anthem. Aaron Burr has a lot to answer for
