Today without advertising

yesterday i met a woman, a photograoher, who claimed that "since there where men, there was advertising"

This made me think if there could be a today without ads?

Easy, a Soviet now.

If you are saying that present day would be similar to the Soviet Union (in regards to advertising), I would say you were wrong. The Communist advertised the glories of Communism, Lenin, Stalin (until he fell out of favour), etc. Propaganda is advertising, and visa versa.

During the last days of the Soviet Union (1985-1991) the television advertising was actually quite common, for anything from lottery to propaganda to (after 1987 or so) consumer products and services. But then again, even in the earlier days there were huge posters and monuments dedicated to spreading the communist propaganda - sometimes on a rather ridiculous scale. So, no commercials/advertisements (presuming propaganda falls under that category) would have probably required a much lower-tech world, or the world where the humanity is either very low in number, or colonized enough space on this planet and beyond to have very low population density. In this kind of an environment with no large population centers and not much travel between different self-sufficient habitats advertising would be unlikely and impractical.

really? what is the name of this better assault rifle? I picked the AK-47 because it is an ASB AH/ISOT AH cliche.

Central planning and only one product of each is produced so no need for similar products to compete for consumer's money so no need for advertising.

That or massive nuclear exchange in 1980s and those who survived are more concerned with finding food than investing money in advertising.

ASBs

I think this one belong in the ASB thread. When Ug decided to Trade his femented grape juice for more furs, He probally hung a Bark Poster, advertising his product on the tree out side his cave.

no _comersial_ advertising

David, I suspect she menat no _comercial_ advertisement.

Alas, aside from a victorious Soviet-Union-type solution (or another
planning economy kind of ideology), I don't see a reasonable PoD for
this one.

Or we could go far-far back in prehistoric times and change the
biology in some way that will affect the human psychology that
will make us all Star Trek Vulcans... :)

The logic dictates that this is imposible.

And anyway, that would violate temporal prime directive.

off: the prime directive

One Starfleed captain, a certain Jean-Luc kept showing
that the best way to acheive something is to break the
Prime Directive. :)

I think you are confusing Prime Directive with Temporal Prime Directive. Which was often broken by certain other captain. But that's what you get when you let women take charge. :(

how to kill the comercials

:)))

Well, this is why the prime directives exist, don'e they?

I thought of another PoD, albeit also not very likely:
a super-Enron type scandal in teh advertismenet industry
that would undermine it. The kind of scandal that happened
circa 10 yers ago in the american baseball (do not aske me
for names, I can not stand this game) and led to a loss of
fans, viewers, and money.

Esentially, within a few years the advertizement would
becomes unpopular, and it even has negative effect on
sails. The manifacturers stop pouring money into it.

This is not going to get us comercial free but it will releave
us from a lot of junk we have to watch on the broadcast TV.

IMO puting a big sign in your shop window saying "SALE!!!!" "XX% off" is advertising. And you'll never get rid of that.
