tl 191 WI: Wade Hampton V assassination

What if after Wade Hampton V was assassinated in Alabama, the Confederacy really cracked down on the freedom party? You know, like arresting Featherston, Keonig, and all of their cronies. Could that have kept the C.S.A. from going down the path of destruction and allowed the country to survive?

It may have destroyed the Freedom Party, but another movement would've emerged in it's place. There was a lot of anger in the Confederacy and an organization like the Freedom Party getting into power was more a question of when than if.

But the trouble is this - none of these groups had Featherston. Yes, the Redemption League and Tin Hats were in cahoots with the Freedom Party, but Willy Knight never struck anyone as a more "rational" Confederate Führer, much less a Hitler-analogue, more as an ersatz-Ernst Rohm who wasn't well liked by anyone outside the RL, who Featherston forgot to eliminate early on, and then got a bit too big for his britches, and Amos Mizell (leader of the Tin Hats) wasn't very influential outside his own organization and the RL anyway.

A big part of the Nazis' landslide victory in the 1930 Reichstag elections was Hitler's ability to capitalize on the Great Depression and the poor state of the German economy. Featherston did the same in TL-191. People like Knight and Mizell, on the other hand, don't strike me as the kind of people who would do that.
