This will be the dedicated thread for the results of the TL-191 United States Presidential Elections. The 1864-1936 elections are being held every week in the Books and Media forum, while the 1940-2012 elections are being simultaneously held every week in the same forum.


1864 and 1940 is running at the present. I will not do the 1868 elections until Nerdlinger does it, so our elections will run concurrently for the first half.

We'll set up a big board on the floor with the names of many contemporary US politicians on it, cut the head off a chicken with a cleaver, and, while whimsically playing a kazoo, we'll watch the chicken's body run around on the board for several seconds until it collapses. Whichever name its bloody neck-stump lands on will be our next candidate. :)

Well Turtledove does include fictional characters in his books (like Blackford or Featherston) so why can't we do it either?

Seem like plausible picks to me, though I admit to general ignorance on the matter. Can you provide your sources? One thing I'll note is that whether or not some candidates run multiple times will depend upon their previous successes or failures. So the list wouldn't necessarily be set in stone like mine but could change based on the results of past polls.

Actually, I want a list set in stone, because it would be bad having the canon be set in stone and the non-canon be flexible.

Well, currently there are no canonical candidates/presidents/VPs for several elections from 1868 to 1908 and for every election from 1972 on. You'd be making the canon, although it will likely end up differing from Craigo's and DBE's canon.

I used Abhakhazia's 2012 candidate lists from his poll, and I used the After the End to make decisions for 1972. After that I looked at each election, the election before or after and removed all of the Southern Candidates. I wanted to give one Republican a win and it was almost Anderson, but I went with Stockdale, Perot's VP instead. I used historical realities and my gut to decided other elections. Recessions are bad for incumbents, long wars are bad for incumbent parties, that sort of thing.

Blaine ran against the incumbent Tilden (and won) in 1880. It's possible that Tilden ran against Hayes in 1876 and actually won, but I don't know for sure.

Our elections will be very similar that year. Of course, I'll have third parties thrown into the mix. It'd be interesting if Tilden won in one of the elections and Hayes won in the other.

Yeah. Is there any right-sapping parties in yours? My voters seem to favor the Republicans pre-1900. They all embraced Remembrance, apparently...
