The Yorkshire Mammoth by Harry Turtledove.

One of the podcasts I enjoy listening to is Clarkesworld, a science fiction story podcast, so when this came up I rather enjoyed it. Not merely because of its obviously a nod to James Herriot, a pen name of a British vet who wrote a series of books on the animals he treated, set in Yorkshire. So it was doubly nice to have an AH story inadvertently remind me of my childhood.
