The World as We Know it Breaks in 2004

I've been thinking about suggesting a "make your own doomsday with the news" game, but I decided to make this thread first because people wouldn't understand what I mean.

Scott Palter of ChangingtheTimes wrote "A Dystopia to Fold Laundry By" in March of 2004. As he states, he basically took some news links and constructed a dystopia based on all of them. The problem, of course, it's not very plausible since it's a half dozen different POD's exploding at once. Second, his initial catalyst- the Muslim world going insane because Bin Laden dies- is kind of unlikely, and probably a bit ignorant and borderline offensive. After all, Iraq didn't have sociopolitical earthquakes after Zarqawi was taken out. And it's not as if the fraction of radical Muslims who even care about al-Qaeda are going to use his death as an opportunity to come out into the open and bomb things randomly. I don't know what the Venezuelan part is all about, but I don't see how these two different crises would happen at the same time.

So, what do you think of his timeline? Also, what do you think of this as an idea for a forum game?

I'm bumping this because it's still a fascinating idea. This was his article:

A Dystopia to fold Laundry by

Spent much of today catching up on chores/email/life after week at GTS show

Had a new dystopia running around my head

Just a basic smattering of the smoldering woes of the world. In the normal scheme of things they erupt for a few days and then go back to slow burn. Everyone talks big but never quite pulls final triggers. But IF…

Sunday March 21st:

· Al J broadcasts a supposed Al Q message that Bin Lauden is dead in the siege in Pakistan. Riots erupt across the Muslim world. Bombs go off in Pakistan, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Paris, Kosovo, Bosnia, Iraq, Saudi, Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria and Morocco. Maybe it was spontaneous. Maybe the man’s been dead for a while. Maybe it’s a hoax. Who knows. Thousands are dead, many of them First World businessmen and tourists. Property damage is in the billions. Major cities in Pakistan, Egypt and Morocco are under martial law with districts out of government control and widespread looting. There are widespread videos from Al J and the Arab media showing what in Western countries would be called police over reaction. Bin Lauden is a widely revered figure of Arab and Muslim pride in a world where they feel grossly put upon [fairly, unfairly…does it matter?]. There are all sorts of crazy rumors on the net, including one that a Paki nuke has gone missing. Rumor sparks overnight movements – many top Indian business leaders and politicians are seen sending family out of the country on special charter flights. Families of lesser Suits and military brass are seen in auto convoys heading for countryside. Indian units are trying to quietly recall men from leave. All night web pix show aircraft being dispersed to civilian fields and ships being franticly readied for sea. [between cell phone cameras, web, etc it is quite hard to do ANYTHING secretly these days unless you have no web links and a real police state neither of which describes India].

China has offered to mediate the electoral dispute in Taiwan. The street protests continue at a low pace but again some of the highest and richest are seen sending family abroad [Vancouver, LA, Singapore, Australia]. It is better hidden here but enough leaks.

In Iraq a giant bomb attack at Karbala kills Grand Ayatollah Sistani. Shiia militia have gone into pogrom mode basically stringing up and gutting every Sunni they catch. US military have sealed off the Shiia cities of the central Iraqi plains but are awaiting orders from DC which is in campaign mode and is moreover totally distracted by a rumor from moveon.org that Bush has Bin Lauden hidden for an October election surprise and the Paki nuke rumor which CIA is waffling BADLY on. CIA says it looks like Musharef may fall but refuses to go further than 50-50 on whether the result will be a jihadistan, Mad Max, or just a change in the name of the general in charge [partially bureaucratic CYA, partially payback for accumulated Bush slights and a good deal of not having a clue beyond what BBC and Fox are reporting]. Bush is on the road campaigning. Cheney is also. Powell and Rumsfeld cannot agree on anything. Gridlock until a conference call can be arranged and Rice keeps arguing that pulling the POTUS and VP off speech/dinner platforms will cause a media feeding frenzy beyond the one they already have.

In Nigeria the death of Bin Lauden and the scenes on the TV [mostly inflammatory stuff from Al J plus sensationalist stuff from Sky/Fox] have led to anti-Christian pogroms in Kano and much of the north. A fair number of rankers and junior officers have joined the Muslim mobs. Deaths are in the tens of thousands. The government is pulling troops out of the oilfields trying to keep this from getting out of hand. This is leading Shell and the other oil companies to pull staff in from the outlying installations which in turn are being looted and torched by gangs from the River States. Rumor has exaggerated this and the oil markets are spiking badly.

In Kosovo the Albanians riots have led to Serb irregulars being motored in to defend their people. NATO has kept the regulars out but simply lacks the numbers to block every back road. The pogroms are by dozens instead of tens of thousands in Nigeria but this being Europe the mess and flights of refugees in BOTH directions are getting MUCH more EU airplay than a bunch of wogs killing each other. Italy has appealed to NATO, the EU and the WEU for help in sealing their coast before a tidal wave of Albanians floods them. There are shooting incidents in Bosnia but things are still under control.

In Gaza the crowds are whipped up by Hamaas that essentially sends them against the Jewish settlements in human waves Somalia style with gunmen mixed with hordes of kids. The resultant pictures show very few dead but the dead and bleeding are all Al J is showing on a continuous feed loop. This is helping keep the pot in Egypt, Morocco and Saudi at a boil.

On the Venezuelan-Columbian border a small AUC-FARC skirmish gets out of hand. Both are being pressed hard by the Columbian government. There have been raids and counterraids by the paramilitaries before. This time regulars on both sides get involved. Small units [scratch companies] but Chavez chooses to use the ‘war’ as an excuse to crack down on his domestic opponents. That night there are ‘tax raids’ on leading opposition media owners and arrests of military and police officers deemed ‘suspect’. The civilian part goes well and a few hundred top opposition figures get tossed into various makeshift prisons. The military/police arrests lead to on base fighting in some places. By dawn Chavez has all installations but less than all the men and far less than all the equipment. There has also been oil installation sabotage with each side blaming the other [it is actually Cubans and Al Q sleepers]. Oil is spiking towards $50/barrel as this leaks out.

Monday the 22nd: the oil market chaos hits the Far East like a brick. As a region they are the most dependant on oil imports and thus the most at risk. They start liquidating their vast dollar reserves to bid in enough oil to ride out the crisis. The markets quickly go disorderly. As the price spikes past $60 heading towards $70 the OECD governments essentially shut them down. Everyone involved is suddenly focused on not being the nation left out. Elites in every 3rd and 4th world nation start sending their families to safety in the First World ‘just in case’ as it is quite obvious that if there isn’t going to be enough oil the First World will grab theirs first.

As dawn breaks in South Asia Musharef holds scattered garrisons while the mob holds the squatter sections of Pakistan’s cities. Many military units are out of communication. India is rapidly moving units to their war stations. The news is spreading through India’s cities producing massive panic flights of tens of millions of people fleeing the Indian cities and the Punjab. The Indian rail and road net implode. The First World governments and Russians are trying to get their nationals out but the airports are besieged by worse mobs than the Viet ones were in the days before the fall of Saigon. The two governments are hurling threats and warnings at each other. The troops on the border are all jumpy. One guys shoots at shadows and there are battalion and regimental firefights. It may not be war but it is clearly no longer peace. The siege of the jihadis in Waziristan is over as the troops have either made common cause with the rebels or pulled back to await developments. In Afghanistan there is a flight of anyone who cooperated with the Americans or fears the Taliban. They are running for the US lines or the Stans.

In Iraq the US units are laggering, essentially leaving the Shia pogrom to burn itself out. The ROE in Baghdad and the Sunni triangle has gone to force protection and collateral damage be damned.

In Saudi the panic flight of the princes and their hangers on has cleared the decks for what amounts to a shootout between the modernizers and the trads. The modernizers have seized the main oil facilities but suspend shipping after an Al Q suicide speedboat takes out a supertanker [French for giggles] in the main channel of the Straits of Hormuz.

In Iran the clerics are seeing anti-Shia pogroms in Pakistan and the beginnings of the same in Saudi. They are rushing to get a few nukes ready and making sure they have loyal officers in the major urban garrisons. With the world oil markets shut they are demanding $150/ barrel for spot delivery and getting it.

In Egypt enough of the army is still loyal but they are leaking men to the growing mobs. The Canal is closed [RPG and suicide boat attacks from leaderless jihadis inflamed by Al J and the internet].

In Gaza and the West Bank the Israelis are at the stage of using air strikes on mobs that no longer bother to hide being armed – the million martyrs are on the march. Their attacks again accomplish virtually nothing but the pictures of the battles are enflaming the world.

Kosovo is rapidly heading towards mutual ethnic cleansing but the low level fighting is spreading to Macedonia and across the Serb and Montenegran frontiers. Large numbers of volunteers are pouring into the region. KFOR lacks both orders and reinforcements. The contingents are retreating into their cantonments and focusing on force protection. The governments of the force contributing nations simply lack the time to deal with this. Austria and Italy have sent troops and paramilitaries to help Slovenia and Croatia set up roadblocks to keep refugees from reaching them. They inform Brussels that are refusing to allow former Yugoslav and non-EU foreigners through for ‘duration of the emergency’.

Nigeria’s oil industry is shut. The nation is imploding into a Congolese level of civil war. In every city and state local mobs stiffened by criminal gangs and dissolved military units are killing everybody not of their religion and ethnicity with scenes out of the Mongol hordes. Nigeria’s neighbors are trying to seal the contagion but are failing.

In Equatorial Guinea a small bomb at the oil transfer port leads to massacres by government security forces who are essentially machine gunning random street crowds. Several jets with key officials have departed for Paris. Oil company security officials are meeting with the army offering to assume the payroll for ‘the emergency period’ as long as the oil keeps flowing.

Morocco has restored order but at a giant blood price. Again Al J and the Euro networks filter for the bloodiest episodes and string run them out of context. The effect here is greatest in the North African ghettos in the EU where ‘sympathy riots’ are rapidly spinning out of control in France and the Benelux nations. Madrid’s socialist government has essentially put the key neighborhoods on dusk to dawn lockdowns to the predictable howls of their more left and civil libertarian elements. Bombs have taken out gas pipelines in dozens of cities. Most are crude and cause limited damage. All are causing political and social chaos. EU ministers council will meet in a late afternoon session to impose gasoline rationing and allow for transnational loans of troops, police, paramilitaries at need. When the Rhine Axis barks, the EU jumps. Currency market gyrations force noontime suspensions of trading in dollar, euro, pound, yen and most majors such that trading is suspended essentially after lunch. The spillover to the stock and bond markets close them a few hours later. Travelers without credit cards to buy local currency are essentially stranded. Even then the companies are putting severe limits on this courtesy.

In Venezuela, Chavez announces a 24 hour curfew to ‘allow security forces to do their work’. Bolivarian militia leads mobs looting the wealthier districts amid scattered street battles with scratch rightwing militias. Aristide lands at the airport, fleeing Jamaica where the looming gasoline shortages have triggered street disturbances. Masses of terrified people force their way into foreign embassies seeking asylum [many of the middle and upper classes are dual passport or can claim such status by parental birth, documentation, real estate holdings, family ties…]. Mobs seeking to block the entrances to the US and Italian embassies clash with embassy guards. Italians use very restrictive ROE and the embassy is essentially stormed by the riot with many dead on all three sides. USMC opens fire. Even more die, but they are overwhelmingly Bolivarians. Chavez flips at hearing this, takes hostage the US diplomats sent to reason with him and declares war over the national TV on the US, Columbia and the EU. He reverses himself on the EU within the hour. He appeals to Iran, Libya and Cuba for fraternal assistance. He suspends all oil shipments and threatens to burn the oil infrastructure to the ground if ‘invaded’.

DC is in media frenzy/political meltdown. It simply cannot cope with more than one media circus at once as the same top players must make all the decisions and must consult their media and political advisers first. State governors and mayors have been responding to soaring gasoline prices, massive shortages by imposing odd/even; putting limits on number of gallons per fillup, keeping ‘extra’ people off blocks long gas lines, imposing local price controls based on undefined ‘emergency powers’. Biggest problem is county executives claiming authority to refuse gasoline sales to anyone not local residents. There are riots on the gas lines, shootings of station owners, attacks on fuel trucks. Many incidents of ‘hate crimes’ against Muslims, Arabs, Sikhs or anyone who vaguely looks Arab. Gangbangers in LA are leading mobs against Korean gas stations. Airlines are requesting Federal intervention as fuel prices soar and suppliers are insisting on prepayments. Our fuel supply system is a perfect storm waiting to happen. Just in time delivery plus NIMBY responses to refineries plus endless regulation/boutique fuel requirements have produced a system that barely functions without major crackup. Prices at the well head have at least tripled before the markets were closed. Major producers aren’t shipping or are shipping at vastly reduced levels. EU and East Asian nations are using cash reserves to sop up what supply there is at any price. Naval ships are being diverted to escort tankers to national ports. The so-called First World coordinating system for sharing a shortage collapses before it can be invoked. The media are screaming for the President to ‘do something’. Kerry and his campaign minions are blaming it all on Iraq and Bush and Halliburton. The FBI cannot distinguish opportunistic crime from sabotage [there are scattered jihadi and Cuban infrastructure strikes but the blame is lost in a rash of violent anger]. Rice and Powell finally persuade the Shrub that the Western hemisphere comes first. What military isn’t in Iraq and Afghanistan is needed to keep Venezuela from breaking the US and the loss of fuel from triggering internal disorder. President announces that he will ask Congress for emergency powers as if wartime…zero attention is being paid to East and South Asia. Functional overload. EU and US have essentially stopped talking. 3rd and 4th level people are keeping each other advised but cannot get their boss’s attention. It is all happening too fast. Overnight an oil terminal goes up in Miami and two carloads of gangbangers are caught trying to torch a tank farm at LAX. The gang boys had been part of a mob doing a replay of the Rodeny King shopping expedition [itself triggered by an inflammatory speech by Congresswoman Maxine Waters calling for a Peoples’ Insurrection in support of Chavez and Aristide and against the big corps ripping off the People] when some guy offered them a sports bag full of Benjamins with the promise of more to plant some C4 out by the airport. The guys aren’t the brightest lights in the sky and cannot give a clear account beyond excitement and promises of riches. Guy sort of looking Spanish or maybe Middle Eastern or maybe Armenian or…on hearing a garbled account of this and word that Fox will be running the story in 12 minutes Bush is awakened to read a Cheney inspired speech over the air calling out all Guard and Reserve units and asking anyone with prior military experience to report to the nearest base with their old ID. The speech isn’t heard by many [it is 2AM on the East coast but phone calls across the nation create monster panic before the phone lines essentially start crashing from traffic overload].

Taiwanese election crisis has been replaced by a Straits crisis. Chinese navy is ordering tankers on route to Taiwan to proceed to Canton instead claiming territorial waters and ‘unsettled conditions in the Taiwan special zone’. Could be overreaction by someone in the South Seas Fleet HQ or a bit of kleptocracy. However Taiwanese government mobilizes. Sky News and CNN report this before their bureaus close. Peking seems to announce [3rd level Foreign Ministry official that no one higher will confirm or deny] a blockade of Taiwan and mobilization. Warns shipping not to come into Chinese territorial waters which are defined as halfway to Guam and Okinawa. Higher government has other problems. The Taiwan Crisis has finished off the world financial system. Chinese banks trying to move funds are discovering that financial globalization is gone. As with the South Seas after the Plaza Accords banks are refusing to move electronic funds by disconnecting from the system. Before the day is out banks are rationing cash withdrawals to favored customers only worldwide as no one knows who will honor what in the current financial meltdown. Factories close all over the mainland as Taiwanese and other foreign buyers and technicians are taken into custody/being held for ransom. Factory owners are trying to flee to major cities ahead of enraged mobs of laid off workers.

In Indonesia pirate attacks [local thieves, jihadis, who knows – after the world meltdown it will be impossible to tell] on shipping in the two main straits have led to a worldwide advisory from Lloyds taking Indonesian territorial waters. This adds a week to oil deliveries to the Far East as the advisory detours tankers south of Timor. Australia announces that it will police the seas between Australia and Timor for ‘safety reasons’ – collective East Asia screams that it is a plot to steal their oil. China threatens ‘retaliation’. Australia tries to call DC to invoke ANZUS. DC too distracted so US embassy in Canberra invokes on its own. Panic flight from Australian cities, some anti-Islamic and anti-Asian street incidents.

In South Asia, both nations are melting down with Pakistan melting down faster. By now there are multiple supposed government on the air with Musharef ‘controlling’ a perimeter in Islamabad. After multiple explosions are heard within his perimeter Al J announces he is dead [later investigation will seem to indicate that as usual Al J had multiple reports and chose a less creditable but more sensationalist one from a jihadi linked source out of London who had zero way of actually knowing if the explosions were a successful jihadi assassination or a very loud fart]. As the world media race to report this as fact, New Delhi decides they can wait no longer and orders a take out strike. The orders leak and are reported on BBC, Reuters, Fox/Sky…tens of millions die in both nations from nuke attacks and the riots as everyone flees the cities. The Indian army pushes across the frontier at Pakistan’s waist towards Islamibad. Pakistani resistance is broken backed [no chain of command, etc] but fanatic [Iwo Jima style die in your tracks]. Indian commando strikes at the jihadi camps in Pakistan are more successful. They kill tens of thousands of jihadi mooks but the main cadre make their escape. In Gujerat the local BJP uses the chaos for a full anti-Muslim pogrom. Scenes out of the fall of Baghdad to the Mongols. Border fighting leads to an unordered Indian invasion of Bangladesh amid widespread mutual massacre of Hindu and Muslim on both sides of the illmarked border

[we resume midway through the 23rd of March 2004 in this ATL]

In the Indian Ocean supposedly civilian Chinese merchants ships turn out to have some armament and have taken any tanker they can find under control, diverting them towards China. There are naval clashes between these actions and various Western fleets essentially trying to do the same thing. This leads to some bizarre situations as the fighting from the Indo-Paki war also spills into the same seas. By the end of daylight in this ocean many navies are at shoot first, ask questions later. The USN has repulsed Iranian attempts to cross the Gulf [we will never know if this was actually ordered from Tehran or was opportunistic response by local commanders or attempts to defend the often Farsi speaking Shia Arabs of the gulf states or kleptocracy or…].

Street fighting rages across most Gulf cities with pogroms against expats, especially the 3rd world ones who lack armed compounds, and against Shiia. The Saudi NG and Army have dissolved into armed bands under various princes or officers. Someone has blown the main shrines in Mecca. Al J is broadcasting the tape with blame being assigned to the US and Israel instead of the various Saudi factions.

Egypt has melted down. Iraq is doing mutual pogroms while the US and Coalition forces essentially dig into their bases and watch. Turkey is threatening to send troops into Kurdistan while the Kurds have declared independence and are ethnically cleansing the region. The EU has managed to keep the Greeks and Turks at truce but both are mobilizing.

Israel has won its war and the Palestinians of the occupied lands are fleeing to Egypt, Jordan. A hundred thousand crazies are conducting essentially leaderless resistance. They are well armed, untrained and inept but Israel’s settlement policy has given them enough targets to tie up the Israeli defense forces for some days. Hezbollah is firing every rocket it has into northern Israel, some with chem. Warheads which in turn is pulling off much of the Israeli Air Force into taking out anything that moves in South Lebanon. With the gloves off everyone in south Lebanon is running for Beirut. Hezbollah is using the refugee columns as cover and the Israelis are not spending much effort on target verification. Some Egyptian units have tried to cross Sinai to aid the Palestinians. There is civil disorder in Jordan from the armed refugee exodus.

Africa’s oil industry is essentially shut and the Nigerian CW has spread to all its neighbors with no end in sight. Serbia and Macedonia are mobilizing and Croatia has begun emergency callups. With KFOR out of the picture the entire Albanian population of Kosovo, Macedonia and rump Yugoslavia are running for their lives. Greece has sealed its borders. Italy is putting recalled reservists along the Adriatic coast and threatening to use deadly force against refugee ships. The Chechens have set off radiological weapons on the Moscow underground. Putin has proclaimed martial law and ordered the FSB to arrest ‘all suspect elements’. Russian forces are rounding up the population of Chechnya and have taken control of the major cities of Georgia. Iran has set off something that produces radiation. They claim it is a nuke. Yield seems way too low but the neighbors are panicked.

French and Spanish have set up detention camps and are rounding up anyone who looks:

Arab , Muslim , Illegal , Dangerous

The port cities of the Benelux also experience major disorders and some sabotage especially against fuel facilities

Algeria has responded to this by suspending fuel deliveries.

Jihadis in London have sent suicide bombers into the City of London and Underground. They kill thousands. Blair has invoked old time DORA powers and orders mass roundups. Labor splits over this but the Tory leadership announces they will support this on a party whip vote. They form a national coalition without even being given ministries. This causes further Labor defections such that Blair will within a day find himself the captive of Tory votes to keep him in office [Lloyd George in 1918], and with a mixed cabinet after Labor resignations. With police resources overstretched there are riots of Muslims and lefties in major cities and counter riots by a weird mix of National Front yahoos plus Hindus plus Sikhs plus African Christians looking for payback. Obviously there are many cases of opportunistic theft and mistaken identity.

Crossing the Atlantic Fidel decides to go down in a blaze of glory and declares himself at war with the US in solidarity with Chavez. He seizes a hundred thousand first world tourist hostages and begins sending shells into Gitmo. The US lacks naval and ground strength but does have air units available. B-1’s and B-2’s roar over Cuba. Within 24 hours the infrastructure will be out and such heavy weapons as the US can find will be toast. However thousands of first world human shields will be dead, a dozen US planes will be lost as the Cuban AF fights with great bravery and Gitmo will still be being sporadically shelled.

The US-Latin war will be the final straw in Mexico’s internal peace. Spurred on by leftist activists and Latin solidarity mobs of young people will attack the neighborhoods of the rich and of the First World expats. The military will not honor Fox’s orders to fire on their own to protect foreigners. It won’t exactly be a coup. It will be more like the PRI structure reasserting itself. Party bosses plus local officials plus union bosses plus police and military officers. They will have a shaky hold on most major cities. Millions will be in flight to the US. Drug and other gangs will have control of some neighborhoods and rural areas. The PRI bosses will collectively sort of have the country but will have no one of them particularly in charge. The left and the mobs will be calling for an oil cutoff and to join the Latin Axis against the US. The US will be demanding protection for its citizens and saying that an oil cutoff will be treated as an act of war. The maquiladoras will be out of business putting millions out of work. The remittances to the US will have stopped dead and everyone with any money will be running for their Houston or Miami bank accounts. Hordes of people will flood the US from TJ, Juarez etc while hundreds of thousands of US Latins will be heading south in their pickup trucks to get the extended family. Texas will have some control of the border but San Diego county and much of southern Arizona will be in a state of anarchy.

The basic US infrastructure will be working but the financial system will essentially be out of order. Big cities with mass transit will be working although very heavily policed. Rural areas and suburbs will rapidly be running out of gasoline and goods on the shelf – just in time means everything works or nothing does. No reserves for oops. UPS and Fedex are only doing emergency delivery. The Post Office admits it is at best partially functional. The House has given Bush emergency powers but the Senate refuses [60 vote rules]…partisanship plus a system designed to slow down things for reflection. Bush is trying to deal with the media politics. Cheney is issuing edicts that much of the bureaucracy is ignoring. People are getting court orders overturning anything and everything everyone is doing. So things are working better red state than blue but the electronic media is amplifying everything. Many cities are under dusk to dawn curfew so people are sitting at home watching the cable nets compete on turning rumor into fear. Internet is doing an even better job of magnifying hysteria. Many banks have closed after cash runs ran them dry. The credit card/ATM system works sometimes in some places but no one wants to take plastic.

USN has nothing near Venezuela but manages to stage a few planes through PR to support the anti-Chavez forces. Columbians do better and take most of the border. Marines get a new stanza to write in their hymn the embassy guard goes down like the French at Camerone when the ammo runs out. Militia slaughters everyone there. Columbian supporting air strikes take out Aristide who was with the mob outside as fraternal observer.

In Panama the Chinese company running the canal arms their employees to hold it for ‘duration of the emergency’. In El Salvador the ARENA government orders arrest of FMLN politburo and declares war on the Latins fighting the US. Sandanista coup in Managua. Riots in Argentina and Brazil from massive layoffs and fuel shortages. Brazilians warn Columbia against spreading the war. Columbia’s answer would sound better in Spanish but concerns Portuguese/Brazilian sexual proclivities. Columbian president does autogolpe like Fujimoro in Peru. Costa Rica declares neutrality. Chilean military sweetly inform their government that they expect it to display solidarity with their Spanish brethren in Columbia against the Portuguese menace.

As midnight comes the freeways north from San Diego are littered with hundreds of thousands of abandoned cars as people fleeing the SD chaos run out of gas. The governor asks for volunteers for a state guard to control the chaos and the NRA offers to email its membership list. Arnold agrees.

As the 24th begins in the Far East, anti-Chinese pogroms begin in Indonesia, Philippines, and Malaysia. Singapore seals its borders to non-Han and asks for Chinese protection. Units of China’s South Seas Fleet are dispatched into the South China Sea. Malaysia and Philippines control the worst of the rioting. The Indonesian government basically implodes. Between nationalism, Islam and general misery the nation was primed before what happened in Pakistan and Mecca. The Arab sat nets have been pouring gasoline onto the fire and the TV images are horrific enough. Various army and police units either take local control or dissolve to join the mobs. They kill Chinese, First Worlders, Christians, Eurasians, anyone with money…scratch one more oil source. The US – Japanese patrol ships in the straits intervene as they can but it is hopeless. Australia announces that it will sink refugee boats on sight. Modifies that within an hour to exempt any with Chinese flag [any of the three Chinese states] after Peking points out missile ranges and percentage of Aussies in cities. DC is even more distracted so US ambassador endorses everything on his own hook. He is in contact with Pearl and resources permitting Pacific Command HQ will back his play. Not a mutiny but beginnings of the US military adopting a do something approach to the DC decision making meltdown.

In Korea Kim Jong Il decides saber rattling is in order. SK government goes into panic mode and asks US forces to leave. SK situation just doesn’t rate in DC so Pearl says yes on their own, starts negotiating with SK for planes and ships to move men and equipment. Kim likes this idea and fires a few missiles past Japan. Japanese announce that all Americans leaving SK are welcome in Okinawa and that they will aid in relocation. Japan severs relations with NK and tells Peking they will hold them responsible for their mad dogs. Japanese explode a nuke off Hokkaido and admit they have such weapons. Two hours later Taiwan does the same. The basement nukes are coming out into daylight.

The SK political decision finishes their financial situation. Their economy functions as part of a US-Japanese global structure. At loggerhead’s with both, plants start trying to close and getting seized by their workers with government encouragement.

The two main China’s are having small air-sea skirmishes in the Straits and cooperating to save the Diaspora in southeast Asia. Similarly the US and China are skirmishing at sea in the Indian Ocean and cooperating in Indonesia.

Pakistan has melted down. Musharef has died overnight. With him went what was left of government in Pakistan. Sunni gangs wander the countryside killing Shia. Indian army units hack their way in while the Pakistani border units and urban militias essentially die in their tracks. The dead of South Asia have passed thirty million and are rising by the hour. Hindu mobs are slaughtering every Indian Muslim they can catch. The twenty biggest cities between the two countries are gone. Only scattered Pakistani planes still operate. Their navy is destroyed. Perhaps one hundred million people have fled the cities. The railroads of all three nations have ceased organized functioning so people are eating areas bare like locusts then fighting over the crumbs. Indian government is still functional but many regional and local officials are working out of central control.

Refugees from Bangladesh are swarming the Burmese border. The ones not slaughtered by Burmese troops are fighting with the Burmese border natives for food and survival.

In Afghanistan the Northern Alliance militias are on an anti-Pushtun pogrom. They have occupied Kabul and are looting at will. In the south various drug gangs and tribal militias, few overtly Taleban but many sympathetic, are killing everyone not kin they can catch. The few US units are laggered and trying to protect those foreigners they can. The main bases at Khandahar and Bagrum are safe but there are no resupply flights coming in.

The Saudi civil war has by now spilled over into the other Gulf emirates except Kuwait where the US military are maintaining a death grip backed by the nominal government of the Emir. The US forces are extracting trapped US and 3rd country civilians where they can in the other Gulf countries but the copter and Marine resources in the Gulf as opposed to Iraq are limited and the problems limitless. Yemen is keeping the lid on barely but has announced it will close the Red Sea Straits to shipping. [this is a meaningless gesture with Suez closed].

Unable to get DC’s attention, Central Command has started consolidating coalition units to leapfrog them back to Kuwait. The US embassy in Baghdad keeps vetoing the decisions and getting ignored. Central Command has negotiated with the Shiia for safe passage out and with the Turks that US compounds in the north will be spared the invasion that begins this day. The slaughter of the Sunni is reaching epic proportions while the local Turkomen are fleeing to US or Turkish forces. The surviving Christians are trying to do the same. The Kurdish militias are fighting and cleansing while many Kurdish civilians are running south for the Shiia zones. The ex-Iranian Peoples Muj units are laggering into the Coalition retreat while Iranian revolutionary Guards are coming across to join the fun, intervene between rival Shia militias and procede onwards into Saudi.

The US and Iran are shooting it out in the Gulf. Tehran will late in the day threaten nukes against the USN. And before dawn have lost every nuke facility, port, army base and airfield to US airstrikes. The radiological disasters will interest the US not at all. The US forces will also smash the Iranian oil facilities flat. Scratch another oil source. Many lower US commanders in Iraq have decided they have more ammo than they will be able to transport. Payback is a bitch. They are spending it on any Sunni target. Some Sunni Arab leaders are trying to open negotiations with Ankara about the Turks going all the way to Baghdad…the surviving Sunni can always be the Turks’s dogs again. They had centuries of practice.

The Jordanian Army is maintaining order, barely. Al Q is off the air. Cairo is broadcasting enough poison but with shorter range. The Syrians are pouring troops into Lebanon trying to maintain order. Many Sunni and Christian Lebanese have called Ankara asking intervention. Israel is halfway into the Sinai ‘as a protective measure’ as Egypt has passed meltdown. Mubarek and son are on Egyptian TV hanging from meathooks but no one in particular has seized the reins yet. The army has some partially functional units but the police have dissolved into the mobs looting the cities and hanging every secular and foreigner they catch. A small armada of refugee ships with Copts and foreigners is heading for Greece but Coptic Egypt is dieing fast and hard. Egyptian TV is broadcasting the slaughter with glee.

In the Balkans a wave of Albanians has hit Italy. The carabinari and army have rounded up many but as the Albanians came armed blood has been shed on both sides. Italians are fleeing the coastal zones as though the Barbary pirates are back. Italy is trying to round up the several millions Arabs, Muslims and other foreigners but few Italians have their hearts in it. Many churches, union halls and other public places are giving sanctuary and what police can be spared are more than willing to ignore anyone not on the street making trouble. Italy will avoid the chaos of the other EU cities.

Kosovo and Macedonia are solving their Albanian problem the old Balkan way. The Croat sections of BH announce union with Croatia and the Serb with Serbia. Both ‘improve’ their positions at the expense of the Bosniaks. The Muslim militias fight as ineptly as usual and the NATO/EU forces start pulling out. Albania declares war on Serbia. Greece takes in those refugees willing to disarm but puts them behind wire.

The EU warns Turkey halfheartedly about Iraq and Lebanon but is more concerned with Turkey and Greece not having at it. Faced with Kurdish riots in many EU cities over the Turkish-Kurd war, the EU decides for once that suppression might be the wiser course. Kurdish militants are arrested, rioters are fired upon and the rest of the EU’s Kurds warned that disorder will produce deportation to Turkey.

In Russia Chechen suicide bombers take out two major oil pipelines. Civil liberties are suspended [such as they still were]. Russia’s roundups in Chechnya produce a flood of refugees but essentially they have no place to go. Putin offers to let any Muslim who wants out and isn’t wanted by the police leave for Turkey. The Turks offer to settle them in soon to be vacant Kurdistan. Azerbaijan is flooded with refugees from Iran. The trapped Georgians flee in circles. The Stans de facto start aligning themselves with Moscow as does North Afghanistan.

The Moroccan Army is maintaining order with EU support but jihadis take out the king and palace with a Beruit sized suicide truck bomb. French commandos restore order in Equatorial Guinea enough that the oil can keep pumping but cannot keep the Nigerian holocaust from taking down Cameroun and Chad. Scratch two more oil sources.

Civil liberties are suspended throughout the EU. Rioters face fire and then internment camps. Illegals are being swept from the streets.

Blair is restoring order such as it is. Roundups of even vaguely suspect Muslims or leftists are accelerating. The countermobs are dispersed but not arrested unless they use violence against the police or army. Blair starts looking at reopening coal pits and suspends oil exports. Scratch another source.

The world chaos breaks the logjam in the Senate. A ten vote Democratic rump [red state people] defect to the GOP. Emergency powers pass. Habeus corpus suspended by act of Congress. Marines from Pendleton given a mission of reasserting order in San Diego while the Governator’s new state guard has greater LA in a 36 hour curfew to allow things to clear up. The guard amounts to an armed posse with a policeman or reservist in uniform in charge. They do roadblocks, street sweeps. Arnie announces that laws be damned – until things sort out residence equals citizenship. He wants the state ID carded as without gasoline rationing nothing will work. CA legislature is trying to impeach him but he is relying on charisma and derivate emergency powers from DC.

Texas is holding up better but has essentially annexed the far side of the Rio Grande under the rump of the Mexican PAN party people. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals in SF is issuing injunctions against everything but USSC breaks ranks and for once in its history issues a declaratory judgment relying on Bush v Gore [same 5-4 on issuing a judgment and the result] – key words are that the constitution is not a suicide pact. Bush [which means Cheney] can run government by decree without court interference. Many office holders at state and local levels are not accepting this to say the least and media is in full feeding frenzy [Bushies have NOT imposed censorship but have grabbed all 3 C-Span feeds for endless government announcements].

Mexican meltdown is hemoraging dead, damages and refugees. Oil facilities effectively done in by Mexican leftists, Cubans and Al Q people [they are undefended and many Mexicans will help to keep their oil out of Yankee hands]. Guatemalan army stages coup, joins US block. Massive riots in Haiti when news of Aristide’s death comes in. The 1st world peacekeepers go force protection on their ROE. A bunch of old regime militias affiliate themselves to the 1st worlders and the rest of Haiti implodes. After half a day of mutual massacre the DR sends troops across the border to stop the flood of refugees. These troops take a shoot first approach, especially towards anyone showing affinity for Aristide.

US air strength is switched from Cuba to Venezuela – longer flight but there is PR to refuel and by the end of the day there will be Santo Domingo as well. As Chavez has broadcast the slaughter at the embassy anything except the oil industry is fair game. Venezuelan army as an organized force goes. Oil fields go as Chavez orders it blown in retaliation. Brazil offers to ‘mediate’ and sends ‘volunteers’ to Caracas. Most die in the air when US planes shoot them out of the sky. Brazil threatens to treat as an act of war.

Chile has been recalling reservists. This prompts Bolivia and Argentina to do the same. Their only ‘action’ has been a planeload of ammo sent to Bogotá. However a mob of Bolivian Indio led by a local militia get in a fire fight with a Chilean border post. There are nationalist issues back to the Great War of the Pacific and ‘racial’ issues – the Indios perceive Chile as ‘white’. Prodded by their military and nationalist sentiment in their populace Santiago threatens Bolivia that if they cannot control their border, Chile will take ‘necessary measures’. The Bolivian government has no control of most of the country but for nationalist reasons will not publicly admit it. Argentina and Brazil express support of Bolivia. Peru makes a few pro-Chilean noises [Chile was their enemy in the war but the Bolivian Indos have made trouble on the Peruvian border too].

Columbia is using its freedom of action to chase FARC and ELN units out of their base areas. AUC are ordered to reform their units in open aid of the army. EU NGO’s have a cow but in this new world who cares. Columbian air strikes haven’t the GPS targeting ability of US ones but have zero scrupples about chasing purely civilian targets. Venezuela begins to melt down.

I read this too - years ago.

My issues:
1. I don't see that level of paralysis gripping Washington.
2. Recent evidence suggests Bin Laden wasn't that big a deal.
3. The US military is too lethal for this. If the gloves come off - as they will in this scenario - the US will shut down the opposition quickly.

I'm guessing it's less about Bin Laden than it is about all of the al-Qaeda/sympathizer attacks done in his name- even the scenario speculates that it was a fake story. Especially the assassination of Al-Sistani.

This dystopia is just so quaint, almost cute in the wake of seven years after and what's happened since then. But I wanna revisit it because it's retro and hence interesting.

Mike to address the three issues you mentioned.

First--the level of paralyses--Washington is not just dealing with one or two crises but several, all of them demanding immediate attention. The intelligence branches are unable to determine what is going on. The president has been on the campaign trail at the time all of this broke loose. During the critical beginning of the crises there is a lack of leadership which only causes things to get worse.

Secondly--I agree that recent events show bin Laden is not the "darling" of the Islamic world everyone thought he was. But, that is in 2011 not in 2004. At that time bin Laden still had a lot more clout and the memories of 9/11 were much more fresh. The TL assumes -- and I am engaging in some interpretation here so Scott forgive me if I am wrong -- that Al Q had some sort of "doomsday plan" in mind if their leader was killed.

Finally--Due to no real leadership and so many crises the U.S. military has too many irons in the fire to handle. It only has so many men to handle so many crises. Which should come first? With no real direction yet, local commanders usually won't take the initiative other then to protect their own troops--at least that's my assesment, military people on this net are free to correct me if I have misread this.

I hadn't linked to the second part of the timeline, so here it is. RIP Scott.

Considering how many things happen daily in the modern day, how much we are glued to live events even more so than in the days of 24-hour cable news but no social media feeds, and how the U.S. and other governments are internally divided, wonder if such a scenario could be written for today? That could be the subject for a Politics forum thread.
