Could 'buffalo' not make a come back in the shape of all that cattle?

You are right. They will have to live on hunter-gatherer foods like lizards, mice, and acorn mush. The stuff they lived on before horses and muskets, and when the buffalo weren't there. The white men with access to gunpowder will kill all the buffalo and deer.
