The Mormon Kingdom of Beaver Island surviving to the present day?

So, I was perusing Wikipedia when I discovered the article on Beaver Island, Michigan:

I couldn't help but wonder, though: if James Strang had not been murdered, how long could his "kingdom" have survived? Is it even possible for it to have survived into the 20th century, let alone to the 21st?

Why not. He was a king of his church as opposed to king of a country according to wikipdia (oddly no Armanian referenses). I don't see how it would be different then calling himself bishop or church boss.

I started a timeline on this, but it never really went far. It's an interesting concept, but from what I've gathered it was pretty inevitable that he'd be murdered the way things went. A better option would be to have them be more friendly to the local populace, and try for a peaceful conversion.
