Stalin goes south

The Germans told the Soviets that they both, along with Japan and Italy, were looking south. Germany for its old colonies, Italy for more, Japan for the European possesions, aand the Soviets for India, PErsia, and the like. They had been prepared to let the Soviets have the Straits if they had asked during negotaitions.

Is this accurate? I know that after the Fall of France, when Molotov met with the German Leadership and demanded the straits they said no.

The question of course is why Stalin would go South and let Hitler consolidate in Europe.
