Splitting the HRE pre-Reformation?

I'm back to AH.com after spending more time working on my thesis (as well as following more sports than I ever had before), so I've come with a thought exercise/question.

How could the Holy Roman Empire be plausibly fragmented before the Reformation? Would the north-south difference be more or less pronounced?

I was under the assumption it was fragmented beforehand. First off you gots your Italian and German states. Secondly you have the states who were in Austria's fold and those who weren't when it became more apparent that the HRE was becoming hereditary.

It was more and more disunited after the Hohenstaufens, yes; but perhaps I mean a more formal dissolution. Perhaps the Habsburgs don't gain imperial ascendancy though remain a power.
