In principle a non sexist couple would have the main career being whichever is the smarter

I personally have little doubt that Hilary is smarter than Bill (though not necassarilly as good a politician.

Suppose Bill and Hilary moved to her home state. She ran for office and he looked after Chelsea.

Would she have had a chance to win statewide office with out having had her husband a President?

I think she could have risen as far as Senator but no farther in this scenario. I say this for a couple reasons.

First off Hillary is a leftist ideologue and probably wouldnt have had the benefit of being around realists like Dick Morris. Being a Socialist in Democrat clothing can be okay in statewide and lower elections, bit not on the national scene.

Another factor is Hillary was not quite as interested in politics as Bill. Yeah, I would see her doing time in a legislature. But she also seemed to like the law firm scene. I could easily see her pursuing a pure legal career rather than politics.

And finally, shes female. As much as we might not like it, being a woman can keep one from the pinnacle.

You didnt make this a major point but I'll delve into it anyhow. I cant see Bill being a house husband given his single-mindedness in going to the top of the political world. I think living in Illinois would be an absolute career buster though given regional frictions. Bill in Illinois probably could go no higher than Federal Congress if he were very lucky. More likely his political career would end in a state House seat.....or the local school board!
