Reunited Iberian Union

Im currently putting together a timeline where im hoping to have Spain and Portugal united in a federal constitutional monarchy. Is there any chance of this happening anytime after the 1860s which is when my POD is. Im hoping to have a nation called the Kingdom of Iberia so I was thinking that Spain could somehow get Portugal in a personal union but im just not sure how this would happen. Also if this did happen, how would the citizens of Spain and Portugal react (I know republicans, communists, socialists and fascists were quite prominent during this time)? What were Spanish-Portuguese relations like in the late 19th century/early 20th century? Would the union be able to last to the present day?

Without a POD before 1600ish I don't think it's going to last. You need existing dynastic ties and claims. Republicanism/federalism/constitutionalism is not going to stick without some precedent, and it was resisted at every turn.

If Spain annexes Portugal and pronounces an Iberian Empire it will seriously tick off everyone else with ties to Portugal.

Further you have the colonies to deal with. Better to have the two kingdoms unite after the majority of their colonies revolt away as in OTL. Less administrative mess.

On the other hand, it might be doable in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. Have the Peninsular War go way in N's favor and you could see the kingdoms reorganized as a single Napoleonic client state. Maybe.

Please, refer to "The Legacy Of The Glorious" for such research - Spain and Portugal unite in 1892 after the Queen of Spain becomes the eldest claimant to the Crown of Portugal, and the Portuguese vote in favor in a referendum.

I have a timeline where one of the Portuguese daughters of Maria the Mad, Maria Victoriana, whom married Spanish prince Gabriel in OTL, only for both of them to die of influenza or something.

Both were basically one or two steps away from the respective thrones.

Say Gabriel's two elder brothers, Charles IV and Ferdinand die of a similar or are made sterile by smallpox when he was young.

Then say Maria' Victoriana's brother Joao dies young as well.

It was not impossible (though unlikely) that each could inherit their respective domains and unite the thrones around 1800 - 1810 or so.

I'm not sure how the Portuguese and Spaniards would like this (Nationalism was already at the fore, I doubt they could force their subjects into any kind of union at this time, it failed in times where the monarchies had more power), nor how the complex politics of the Napoleonic era would play.

I may start a thread on this.

After Spain's Glorious Revolution the Spanish crown was considered to be offered to the (former Consort) King Fernando II of Portugal. That would put his son, the then King of Portugal as direct successor of Spain.

That was not looked kindly in Portugal at the time so Fernando dismissed that possibility.
