Prime Minister John Profumo

The Profumo Affair is one of the biggest WI's in British politics but nearly all discussion about seems to focus on the wider political ramifications and from what I've found searching this forum there's little discussion about what could have happened to the man himself who was tipped for bigger things.

So what if he either never meets Christine Keeler or news of their affair never comes to light, could Profumo have made it to No. 10? He probably wouldn't have succeeded Macmillan but what would his chances have been in a subsequent leadership contest?

Could have become leader of the Conservatives instead of Heath assuming no brown stuff hit any revolving implement. He doesn't strike me as the sharpest tool in the box. However if that was important then Butler would have led the Conservatives and Crossland the Labour Party.
