When Hitler & Speer Architecture finished rebuilding the Shanghai in 1938, renamed Neue Shanghai a year later, the city was greatly enlarged and was to be divided into three sectors based off of the three cultural influences on the city; the south sector became influenced by German modernist architecture (being called the German sector), the northwest was traditional Chinese architecture (the Chinese sector), and the Northeast was influenced by traditional Japanese architecture (the Japanese sector).
