For the 40th anniversary of Doomsday, former chief of defence and Marshal of Finland Jaakko Valtanen met with surviving Finnish and Soviet veterans of the Winter War, Continuation War, and World War III in the former contested city of Viipuri/Vyborg. For the now 98-year-old marshal, it was a gesture of reconciliation with both the Soviet Union and the Republic of Karelia. Soviet veterans and Finnish veterans marched shoulder to shoulder, laying a wreath at the location of the former Viipuri cathedral.
