Pearl in 40,Barbarossa in 42

What would happen if the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour one year early but Germany due to an extended Greek campaign, invade Russia in May 1942.

i think for the japanese it would be much the same as otl. maybe they control the intiative for a few extra months since america hasnt really mobilized yet but the results would be more or less the same.

for a later barbarossa it would depend on what happened in the mean time. if the germans used 1941 successfully to capture the suez canal and potentially force the brits to sue for peace it could be to their advantage especially if they introduce their heavy tanks in time for the later invasion

in all honesty though it would probably help the russians who where still realing and absorbing lessons from the war in finland and their t34 was just comming onto line. give them an extra year and the germans will have to face tank corps and armies that are loaded with t34 i would imagine the germans wouldnt make anywhere near the progress they did in otl . the russians would capture berlin 6 months early

Well for starters only 4 of the 6 Carriers would be completed at the time from the Japanese side. The 3 American Carriers would have a chance of being in harbor at the time. The American fleet would be in a much less state of readyness since Japan had no reason to attack yet, the export control act was not passed yet. It is ASB for the Japanese to attack a year early

For Germany to attack 2 years late, It would be disastrous. The Soviets at this time had the T34 in mass circulation and the Russians would be much better prepared with two years to train and prepare.

The Red,

CalBear routinely addresses the Pacific part of your question, the most recently being within the last few weeks. It's a common question and sees quite a bit of repetition.

Japan cannot launch a Pearl Harbor operation before late 1941 because she doesn't have the tools necessary to launch such an operation until late 1941. When you search for CalBear's many explanations, you'll be able to read about the aircraft portion of the question. Japan either won't have developed the aircraft they used in 1941 or won't yet have them in sufficient numbers.

Among the other assets Japan will be lacking are two carriers, Shokaku and Zuikaku. The former won't be commissioned until August of '41 and the latter until September. Remember, even after being commissioned, a warship needs to "work up" it's crew and, in the case of carriers, it's air wing. If memory serves, both of those new carriers finished their work-up periods in November of '41.

Probably a mixed bag for Japan. This gives them an extra year before the essex class starts impacting the war, and means that the American edge in carrier based fighter aircraft is delayed, which probably helps. OTOH, Japan is going to be missing Shokaku and Zuikaku for the first few months of the war, which will seriously hamper their operations. In fact, Pearl harbour may not even happen (at least, as we know it) if there isnt time to digest the lessons of taranto. American advance may be slower, but by 1945 the war is going to effectivly be over.

For germany, it is a far more clearcut case. Every year that they delay gives the red army one more year to rearm, and makes Barbarossa that much harder. However, things do get interesting if Hitler declares war on the US as he did IOTL. May result in the western allies being more successful in europe, given extra time.
