PC: Francis Thomas picked as National Union Vice-President in 1864?

Jacksonian Congressman in the 1830's, Democratic Governor of Maryland in the 40's, and Unconditional Unionist representative during the Civil War. If Andrew Johnson dies during the War, could this border state abolitionist become picked for Lincolns second VP, or would some other more likely pick have happened?

Anything is possible.

As a border state republican, he might have balanced the ticket better than Johnson.

But Lincoln seems to have wanted a War Democrat, to maximise his appeal.

Failing Johnson, the obvious alternative seems to be Daniel S Dickinson of New York. Lincoln would have preferred a Southerner if he could find one, but the choice there would be limited.

TKI did make a good cane in his Glorious Union TL about Joseph Holt: He is a Kentuckian, Buchanan's Secretary of War and also Lincoln's JAG

But as you said, only Holt and Johnson seem to be the ONLY notable southerners known as War Democrats. I seriously cannot think of another one.
