No Redemption, Not Ever: Germany in 2022 as hated and feared in Europe as Russia

To make this interesting, the split from OTL has to be after 1940, with WWII already happened or about to end.

I propose this as an open discussion, if you have your own TL ideas, but I can already think of a rough TL, which I'll post below:

--------

After the Great Patriotic War was won, most of the former nazi empire east of the Rhine came under Soviet occupation. The GDR, founded in the late 1940ies, became the successor state of the Reich. Attempts to treat the tiny Saarland under Western influence as the seat of the legitimate post war german government were quickly abandoned, and the Saarland was instead ultimately recognized as a new micro nation.

The Eastern Bloc grew immensely powerful due to the combination of Soviet resources and military might and the industries, science and technologies provided by the new socialist germany.

Still, by the early 21st century, the Eastern bloc collapsed due to its own contradictions. Besides citizen's revolts and a failing economic model, the bloc had also suffered from increasing tension between the GDR and the USSR, with the former representing the biggest chunk of the bloc's GDP and demanding the role of a junior partner, leading to speculations of an intra-socialist civil war.

The early 2010s were a period marked by both chaos and tentative optimism, with central and eastern Europe making a painful shift to some kind of capitalism and representative democracy.

It was not to last. The new german government, leading a population frustrated over the social and economic turmoil, and utterly disillusioned and nihilistic after the ideological collpase of the Socialism that was supposed to be their nation's rebirth and new raison d'être, is authoritarian, nationalist and increasingly revanchist. Opposition parties are more or less silenced, and Die Wende Für Deutschland, under Bundespräsident Bernd Hohenheim, reigns with no meaningful opposition.

Germany is seeing an economic recovery through massive expansion of heavy industry and, in no small part, weapon manufacturing.
Resource imports are the foundation of an unwasy partnership with post-Soviet Russia.

In a spiral of diplomatic frictions and mutual suspicion, not helped by Hohenheim's chauvinist and often racist and homophobic rhetoric as well as Western attempts to support civil rights movements and minorities in germany, there is now once again talk of war.

Hohenheim is openly musing about how the Saarland and Austria have no business being independent countries, waxes poetically about the catastrophy of the Oder-Neiße border and german claims to Alsace-Lorraine. According to him, the 20th century was rightfully supposed to be the german century, and post 1914 is a mistake to be corrected.
East European nations, trapped between an increasingly unhinged germany and Russia, fear for their future. France so far has blocked their EU and NATO membership, seeing the entire region as a ticking time bomb.

After civil unrest in Austria, a post-socialist country with its own set of problems, escalates over the question of closer alignment with the EU and NATO, there are rumors of little green men with Prussian accents appearing in the border regions.

Most concerning for the US, intelligence suggests germany may have secretly started working on its own nuclear program...

A) I'm pretty sure that this is current politics.

B) A Höcke Germany would be a fascist state with opposition arrested and killed, not just silenced. He's literally a Fascist.

A) No it's not, for crying out loud. The party name is supposed to be a joke, but if you knsist, I change it to some "plausible Alternative".

B) He doesn't have to be. This is not OTL Höcke. Does not mean he doesn't gravitate towards the more evil end of the political spectrum.
But you know what, fine, let's pick some other random butthead. No cameos then.
