New Hannibal: Quintus Sertorius, Indepedent Hispania

Quintus Sertorius was a very noted statesman and general in the Roman Republic but even more notably he was Pro Consul and leader in Hispania where in a war named after him he battled with Pompey over establishing his own Roman styles Republic in Hispania. It would seem at quite a few junctures Sertorius could have killed Pompey and won victory, though under the latter period of this conflict fortune of war was turning against him by the time he was assassinated.

I am curious if he had managed to crush Pompey would or could he have established complete control over Hispania independently or would he have plunge back into Roman Politics. Certainly without the Roman Republic breaking apart he would be targeted by Caesar and Augustus or whoever.

I suspect that this wouldn't last; 1st century Hispania was still a colonial province in a lot of ways, lacking the manpower or resources of Rome. Eventually, someone will seize it.

Sertorius very much wanted to return to Rome, he saw himself first and foremost as Roman and offered several times to lay down his arms and return home if allowed to do so. The war was a continuation of the Marian and Sulla civil war rather than its own beast.

Sadly this wasn't an option as Roman politics was vicious and played for keeps.

He controlled a great deal of Spain but Rome dwarfed it in manpower and resources at this point. Spain was still reliant on allied tribes, the slightest weakness would see them change sides.

At best you'll have a sizeable kingdom which collapses on Sertorius death, but even if he'd killed Pompey Rome would have just sent another army or offered clemency to some nobody in his court to kill him.
