Christ, why the hell is Oman's population growth so high lately? Yemen civil war or something else?

In 2010 there were a reported 1957,336 Omanis and 816,143 non-Omanis. In 2019 there were a reported 2,655,453 Omanis and 1,962,815 non-Omanis. The reported Omani population grew by 36% during those years. When comparable sources are used (2010 uses census results, while 2019 uses national registry figures, and the methodology is not the same), the growth of the Omani population is closer to 32%.

The largest non-Omani groups living in Oman are, predictably, Indians, Bangladeshis, and Pakistanis.

What could happened when Allied and ROK Army won the Korean War in late summer 1950? What would democratic reunify Korea look like, as well as alternate Taiwan and Hainan?

So a few months back I posted an OTL map of population change between 2010-2020 in absolute numbers but forgot to finish and post this one that shows it as a percentage of the populations.

Some Notes:
1. As with absolute numbers, much of the highest percentage increases was in Africa, though several Middle-Eastern countries also kept up large increases as well.
2. The top three countries with the highest percentage increases were: Oman (67.90%), Qatar (55.20%), Angola (49.83%).
3. The top three countries with the largest percentage decreases (IE populations declining) were: Moldova (-26.53%), Syria (-18.10%) and Latvia (-10.04%).View attachment 689654
I'd imagine that central Europe's population decline is due to emigration, but that can't be the case in Japan. Is it just very low birth and immigration rates?

Plagiarism wasn’t my intentions, also these maps were by u/alagremm. If you want me to take these down that’s fine.
I love that map series over on Reddit, so it's good to expose them to people who may not have seen them there!

Just a bit more obvious crediting of the original creator would be good.

This isn't the right place to ask. If you're going to make a timeline out of your map, or pose more questions on it, you should crosspost your map in the Post-1900s forum and follow up there. Asking them here without context just confuses people.

Christ, why the hell is Oman's population growth so high lately? Yemen civil war or something else?

It's more that it's starting from a lower population base with high fertility; in terms of absolute numbers Oman's population went from just over 3 million in 2010 to 5.1 million in 2020, though Yemeni refugees may be part of it.

It's the result of a catastrophic collapse in the birth rate combined with being generally opposed to immigration* yes.
Japan had its population peak roughly in 2010 at 128 million; at present it's basically declined to the population it had in about 1999.

*Though even then Japan has seen a pretty large amount of immigration (a good deal of it Western) over the last 15 years; not only are there are at present 3 million foreign national residents in Japan, but immigration to Japan has basically stayed steady since 2012, even during 2020 the immigration rate continued.

Why is Garudoranzu named after a Japanese transcription of English "Goldland"?
I've noticed that seems to be the default on google translate. I've made the mistake of choosing the transcription rather than an actual translation a couple times when I was not thinking.

I think if you do combination words that are written together (Goldland, Southland...) it tends to go with katakana transcriptions rather than translations. I think writing it separately increases the chance of correct translation.

Dominion of Rhode Island: The Judas Colony by u/Alagremm
s08u4zu50mn61.png

The Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations was among the earliest British colonies in North America and despite its small size an economic powerhouse in trade and industry. The port cities of Providence and Newport were major centers for Atlantic triangular slave trade in New England and a source of great wealth for the United Kingdom. But the exploitation of Americans by Britain drove Rhode Island to be the first of the Thirteen Colonies to renounce its allegiance to the British Crown on May 4, 1776, leading to a military response from the British and hastily assembled Loyalist forces. British forces retook Newport in December 1776 and held it against combined Franco-American force which attempted to drive them off Rhode Island, otherwise known as Aquidneck Island. As the tide of war turned against Britain, Loyalist forces retreated to a few key strongholds- including Aquidneck Island.

By a cruel twist of fate, it was William Franklin, the son of renowned Benjamin Franklin, who became the leader of Loyalist forces and a proud advocate of British rule in the colonies. Despite years of imprisonment by the Yankees and his son joining his grandfather’s side in the revolutionary struggle, William Franklin’s leadership skills and diplomatic ability made him a shining figure among Loyalists and the first governor of Rhode Island appointed after the loss of the American mainland to revolutionary forces. Although William Franklin and his father remained estranged for the rest of their lives, his son William Temple Franklin later joined him in Rhode Island after becoming disillusioned with the factionalism of the newly established United States. Despite its descent from one of the Founding Fathers, the Franklin family remained a major force in Rhode Island’s politics and produced several governors and diplomats who defended the colony’s interests against the nation their ancestor helped create.

The Treaty of Paris signed after the end of the war stipulated an end for military conflict between the United States and United Kingdom by recognizing the independence of the Thirteen Colonies – but failed to recognize the continued division of the colony of Rhode Island, leaving the British-controlled Aquidneck Island a disputed territory. William Franklin, while fiercely loyal to the Crown, managed to secure a degree of autonomy for the colony and engaged in frugal efforts to ensure the security and prosperity of the last remaining shred of New England. With a wealthy port by its side, the State of Providence Plantations and Rhode Island was reluctant to join the United States, with many of the state’s residents interested in maintaining their hard-fought independence from central government – and as it had independent wealth and trade coming through the vibrant port of Providence, it was the only small state that could theoretically survive independent of the proposed federal union in 1787. It was therefore last of the Thirteen Colonies to ratify the United States Constitution in 1790, and only after being confronted with the prospect of the greater financial impositions it would suffer being treated as a foreign country, leaving Rhode Island surrounded by the United States and in great peril. During the War of 1812 Rhode Island found itself expectedly blockaded by the American military but remained impenetrable to enemy forces thanks to the extensive series of military fortifications and the diplomatic talents of the Franklin family. Rhode Islanders bravely prevailed throughout the merciless blockade up until the end of the war and the following Treaty of Ghent, with the reward for their perseverance being the official recognition of Rhode Island as a British territory by the United States – and with territorial dispute finally settled, the name of the neighboring U.S. state was officially changed to the State of Providence.

Despite the recognition by Washington and its advantageous position, Rhode Island’s wealth was hard hit by the abolition of slavery by the British Empire in 1833, three decades before the issue tore its neighbor apart. Although the winds of industrialization reached Rhode Island, it could not match the levels of industrial advancement in Providence or New York, leading to the island’s slow decline – until the Prohibition became law in the United States in 1920. Breweries sprung up on every corner, people sung praise to gin and rum, and kids gathered wide-eyed on the streets to listen to bootleggers’ wild exploits and tall tales; the very name “Rhode Island” became eponymous with contraband spirits, the name uttered with gratitude in countless speakeasies across the great nation. The United States government attempted time and time again to institute harsh measures against Rhode Island but could not declare an embargo due to the inevitable damage it would do to US-British relations. However, Rhode Island’s spirit industry declined just as quickly as it first expanded once the Prohibition was repealed in 1933, smack in the middle of the Great Depression; Rhode Island’s economy sank, leaving Rhode Islanders destitute and the Dominion government utterly insolvent. Along with the Dominion of Newfoundland, Rhode Island gave up self-rule in 1934, submitting to direct rule from London until it could once more reach self-sufficiency.

Relations between Rhode Island and the United States remained tense even after the end of the Prohibition, with some of the legal restrictions remaining up until the Second World War, when the tiny nation became a major element of the Allied supply line and a key foreign post for the Royal Navy. Enormous economic investment from the United States and a spirit of unity made the United States and Rhode Island come closer than they have since the Revolution. After the end of the war, as the status of Rhode Island was once more being discussed by the British government, a popular movement for admission to the United States has won the support of up to half of the population, bolstered by the unprecedented cooperation and fraternity between Rhode Island and the United States. However, despite the idea’s popularity on both sides of the border, popular support for unification quickly fell once it became clear that Rhode Island would not be admitted as a state, but rather be unified with the State of Providence. With public Americanism quickly fizzling out, Rhode Islanders were put before the same choice as the people of Newfoundland – joining Canada or becoming independent. Unlike Newfoundlanders, Rhode Islanders had little in common with Canada, embracing their New English identity and pursuing independence as the Dominion of Rhode Island.

The proud New England banner that once fluttered over British colonies has once more become a symbol for the denizens of Rhode Island in 1965, chosen both for its historical value and due to its matching colors to what soon became Canada’s national flag. Nowadays the proud red banner is widely recognized as a symbol of the Thirteenth Colony – a glimpse of what the United States could have been.

Deus Ex 2052.png

Here's the world of Deus Ex in 2052.

1. HAARP is still as active as ever.
2. After feeling abandoned by the federal government following the Big One, the Northwest States, along with Utah and fringe groups in Texas, the Northwest Secessionist Forces declared their intention to secede in 2031. This movement was crushed in the Northwest War, and today the region remains as tense as ever. FBI-run "good behavior" camps are still active, while the National Secessionist Forces are still serious about seceding.
3. California has been reduced to the poorest state in the country after the Big One struck in 2030. San Francisco was destroyed, while Los Angeles and all land south of Lompoc sank into the ocean. The Gray Death pandemic certainly hasn't helped matters.
4. Area 51, the stronghold of Majestic 12 in the United States.
5. The lower levels of New York City are a maze of ghettos, mass graves and homeless camps. The rich have migrated to the tops of skyscrapers, and UNATCO has set up shop on Liberty Island. After all, it was the terrorist group Silhouette who decapitated the Statue of Liberty.
6. Texas has become a battleground after the Russo-Mexican Incursion, with Austin lying just south of the front lines.
7. Mexico remains one of the few states in Latin America independent from Majestic 12 control. The Drug Lords have allied with the Russian Mafia and taken the role of a shadow government instead.
8. The South American Economic Coalition (SEAC) is Majestic 12's main means of controlling the continent. "Control" is a rather loose term- there's regular government turn-overs, large pockets of resistance still stand between the secret society and its dream of one world government, and the drug trade is all but impossible to control.
9. The Vilama Caldera, the site of the largest volcanic eruption of the 21st century. Huge swathes of land in Argentina, Chile and Bolivia were coated with hot ash and over 100,000 people were killed. Even decades later, the region remains an uninhabitable wasteland.
10. The Arctic Ocean is home to the ruins of the Panchaea Project. Originally built in 2016 as a means to curb climate change via iron seeding, the machines were destroyed during the Aug Incident of 2027. Since then, climate change has continued unimpeded and melting permafrost across the region has released ancient diseases that have severely lowered the global population.
11. After the collapse of NATO, Europe has miraculously been spared the ravages of disease and drugs. Majestic 12's control is strongest here, politically and financially, although mostly in the European Union. Eastern Europe, meanwhile, remains a hotbed of conflict and civil war.
12. Paris, the last major outpost of the Illuminati after Majestic 12's coup.
13. The Russian Federated States, formed from a bloodless coup in 2016, is the largest state to remain free of Majestic 12 control. The Russian Mafia thrives as the only source of luxuries (and some necessities) in Russian life, politicians take their marching orders from a variety of crime bosses and they've formed a solid alliance with Mexican Drug Lords. Many have also obtained, and can deploy, small tactical nukes if the need arises.
14. Israel has remained occupied by Arab Coalition forces since the end of the Six-Month War in 2021, securing Majestic 12 control over the region. Even three decades later, the Israelis have fought for their independence.
15. After the Saudi oil fields were destroyed in a series of terror attacks, the world experienced a severe energy crisis. This only strengthened the need for the Arabian states to form a united front, and M12 had nothing to do with it at all.
16. While it was hit hardest by the 21st century plagues, Africa is rapidly emerging as a new Eden, albeit one largely under Majestic 12 control. Some areas, such as Lagos, have managed to remain independent. Over the last fifty years, many Hong Kong expatriates have moved to Africa, resulting in the establishment of thriving Afro-Asian communities. New Hong Kong has essentially become the Casablanca of this era.
17. After India was struck by antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis, Pakistan's trials of "Calcutta 16" and an unavoidable tidal wave of political upheaval, India and Pakistan literally came to blows. The result is a mosaic of micronations, warlord states, nuclear deserts and tens of millions of survivors living in conditions that make them year for the old slums. Majestic 12 has officially written off the region, not that it really matters to them anymore.
18. Bangladesh, meanwhile, has largely come out on top.
19. China, the world's largest economy, has essentially become the poster child for Majestic 12's plans for the world- centralized government, huge population and near monopoly on advanced human augmentation technology. Hong Kong, though a part of this empire, retains a thriving black markets and a strong desire for freedom, no matter how hard the Chinese government comes down on them.
20. Japan is only now pulling out of the Lost Decades, after prime minister Ataru Moroboshi instituted a new policy of 'neo-sakoku' back in 2021. This practice has kept them independent from Majestic 12, at least.
21. Australia has been through a lot the last few decades, from declaring itself a republic, discovering fossil fuels off the coast of Antarctica during the energy crisis, facing a civil war between Pro-Chinese northern forces and the South Australian Federation, yet it's managed to largely fly under Majestic 12 and even the Illuminati's radar. With the way things are going, it could very likely become a global power fairly soon.
22. New Zealand became a client state of Australia six months after the Republic took off and may officially be the safest place to be outside of Antarctica

I meant the translation to be ''Goldland" with the Japanese settlers discovering gold there.
I mean, yeah, but the issue is that it's still just the English word "Goldland" in (to oversimplify a bit) a Japanese accent.
I've noticed that seems to be the default on google translate. I've made the mistake of choosing the transcription rather than an actual translation a couple times when I was not thinking.
This explains it though, thanks.

I doubt many of them will ever get citizenship, though, unless there are some sharp changes in Japanese culture.

(Not that it's necessarily unpleasant for foreign residents, outside of a few nationalities the Japanese have Notions about: I have a sister in Japan, where she works as a translator - she's been there a decade and is in no hurry to move back.)

It's not actually super difficult to get citizenship, the reason a good deal of long-termers/lifers don't is that Japan forbids dual/multi citizenship and most immigrants simply choose to remain as Permanent Residents since they can retain their citizenship elsewhere, though of course the downside being you can not vote of run for office.
