Map Thread VIII

Not to be rude, but if that's the case maybe you should wait until it's done to post it instead of spamming the thread with large maps only you can easily decipher since only you know where they are going.

I've very interested to see your final map. But these in-progress versions leave much to be desired.
thats pretty much why im posting them here. im looking for feedback on what provinces could be added or changed to improve the map itself and besides, its not like there's much that needs to be deciphered: theres just provinces on land, black borders outlined with green, and maritime provinces outlined with blue

and besides, in the last thread (or maybe it was earlier in this one), no one complained much about updating the progress on the map

Well, I just decided to use the old province names of New Zealand and made the map in German to add some variety (and since there is only few text on it anyway). The name Tasmania: Well, Abel Tasman discovered New Zealand and I thought it would be fun if a Republican New Zealand throws away their colonial name and chooses something else (but not Maori of course, for that it is too early).

So I don't think there would be significantly more Germans or Irish there than OTL, unless there are massive butterflies.

To be frank, I don't think New Zealand would ever adopt the Maori name for us officially. Not that it doesn't sound nice, but a white populace vastly outnumbers the Maori and (despite the "positive discrimination" towards them) New Zealand has been our name since Westminster, and since we fought in the World Wars.

Very nice. Only one quibble...I'd like to break it to you gently, but NORTH AFRICAN ARABS KNEW ABOUT IRRIGATION BEFORE EUROPEANS SHOWED UP WHAT WITH LIVING IN A DESERT AND ALL JEEZ

Bruce

It's an ASB map :p. But I know they knew about irrigation, I'm not stupid. In the world I created the Italians brought with them the benefit of much more advanced irrigation technology - it was supposed to be a running joke in their world that the Africans complain that it isn't their 'traditional' method of irrigation. And that their culture is being swamped out by European devices and people, but they don't know how lucky they are that they didn't get France as their master...

This is a map for the aftermath of Red Alert III, a map in which the Empire of Rising Sun has been destroyed by a combined Sovjet and Allied effort. This leads to a renewed Cold War between the Sovjet Union and the Allies. As the alliancie of convenience and the incredible effort it took to completely take down any Imperial presense in the former Empire of the Rising Sun has disallowed a coninuation of the war. Now 50 years later new factions have risen in the world.

NAPDO, North American-Pacific Defensive Pact. The NAPDO was established 10 years after the initial defeat of the Japanese. With the Allied/American occupation zone being Japan proper as well as Taiwan and various Pacific islands the United States began to focus on the Pacific ocean. With the West Coast becoming more and more important due time. After the pacification of Japan by the Allies it became a new allied nation. Together with Taiwan, which became an independent nation far earlier due to it's bad history with the EotRS. Now the NAPDO an alliancie between nations at the Pacific dominated by the United States of America has become a more seperate faction amongst the allies, with it's main inter-alliancie rival being the European Alliancie. Later on nations such as ANZU, Argentinia, Chile and the Guyana Union joined as well. A short pawn war between the Sovjet Union and the NAPDO alliancie made the rearrangement of the Caribean possible. In this process Haiti and the Dominican Republic joined the NAPDO alliancie, allowing the USA it's old eyesore Cuba to be surrounded, this has made Cuba a lesser threat in the eyes of the public, as rocket shields on Haiti, Bahama's and Jamaica now surround the island. The new public enemy was the Latin American Socialist Republic.

The NAPDO alliancie will allow a player to choose between several nations, the USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan and ANZU (Australian & New Zealandic Union)

European Alliancie or EA, the European Alliancie was established a mere 8 years after the war. With the Americans starting to focus on the Pacific ocean the Europeans decided to make their own more integrated defensive alliancie. Starting with the removal of smaller entities into more pan national entities. This created the enlarged Federal Republic of Germany which now includes Austria and Switzerland. As well as a split up of Belgium and a renewed Yugoslavian state. The Scandivian nations also decided to start a union to keep up with these new larger nations. After it's foundation the European Alliancie has quickly expanded from it's core members on the European continent, fearfull of the Sovjets the Republic of Turkey was soon allowed to join the European Alliancie. An effort of North African nations to defend themselves from communism which was at this time spreading rapidly through Africa was to form the Maghreb Union, which allowed to low population states of North Africa to form a strong nation with a stronger vote inside of the European alliancie. This was also the motivation for the Songhai Union or Sahel Union, as well as the various West African nations that merged. This policy of merging was strongly supported by the European Alliancie.

The European Alliancie allows the player to choose between the following nations: Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom, the Republic of France, the Maghreb Union, the Scandinavian Union and the Republic of Turkey.

The Commintern, more commonly :)rolleyes:) known as the Sovjets is an organisation established to spread that what is sugar, spice and nice around the world, namely Communism. After several large reforms the Commintern was modified to be a somewhat more equal alliancie between the many communist nations. Who's number was increased quite a lot after the war. The Sovjet Union started a process of decentralation of Russian power. With the Russian Socialist Republic still being the most populous and most developed nation in the Commintern, but greatly reduced in territory. The Russian Socialist Republic is however a part of the Sovjet Union properly, the first step in the Commintern towards a unified Communist world state. Aside from the Sovjet Union the Commintern originally included the People's Republic of China, but after it's liberation from the EotRS China has become an economical giant, making it split from the Commintern into a more capitalistic version of Communism as well as developing it's own sphere of influence in Asia.
Besides China the Warshau Pact, or arguably the Eastern European Federation was established to show the world that the Commintern was not actually dominated by Russia's national interests. The Baltic nations where released and together with Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ukraine they became a seperate and powerfull entity in the Commintern.

The Commintern allows the player to choose between the following nations: The Russian Socialist Republic, the Warshau Pact, the Persian Socialist Republic and the Latin American Socialist Republic. (I'm still looking for other interesting options, perhaps something in Africa.)

The Shanghai Treaty Organisation, or also known as the Chinese sphere of economic vassals is a nation that filled up the vaccuum that the EotRS left after it's defeat. With massive Sovjet and Allied aid the People's Republic of China quickly recovered and had an economic boom. With it's massive population it was sure to dominate East Asia in the name of Communism. This is where the allied aid mattered. As the Chinese began to see the virtues of Capitalism they started to distance themselves from the Sovjets, thus after several years creating their own independent sphere. The Shanghai Treaty Organisation was thusly established at about the same time as the NAPDO was created. But the Shanghai Treaty Organisation, unlike what NAPDO propaganda claims, actually started out as a mere trade agreement between Korea and China. But with China's growth more nations wanted to affiliate themselves with the Chinese. To hop on their economic bandwagon. And while the allies where busy in Japan, the Carribean and Latin America the Chinese managed to tie several East Asian nations to them. Eventually including the other economic giant in East Asia, namely Indonesia. Indonesia is the strongest partner of the People's Republic of China in the STO. And with it's large population and natural resources a good balancer in the STO council. Thus allowing smaller nations to have a voice against China if Indonesia get's the rest behind it. Which has allowed the slow transformation of the STO into a more military alliancie. Thus becoming a new superpower block. This new status was strengthened as the Commintern asked for Chinese help in spreading Communism in Africa. With the STO it's interest in Indian Ocean trade a great project was started in East Africa. Which after several dozens of wars and economic treaties became a new entity. The East African Rebuilding Organisation, ironicly most the need for rebuilding was caused by STO money.

As the Shanghai Treaty Organisation the player can choose between the following nations: The People's Republic of China, the IndoChina People's Republic, the People's Republic of Indonesia, the People's Republic of the Philippines and the East African Rebuilding Organisation.

The world today,
After another 20 years the world has become a more multipolar one. With no longer two factions dominating the world. And while the Europeans and Americans are still closely allied, as are the Chinese and the Sovjets new powers are on the rise, and differences between old allies begin to grow. Brazil, South Africa and India may offer the key to dominating the world of tomorrow. As every faction is striving for power, a cold war is about to go hot!

This is an elevation map of part of my conworld, the Alacan islands. The highest mountain is about 4,000 meters tall, and the total area shown is from about Monterey, CA to Lower British Columbia, and at a similar latitude. It's hard to see the full detail here, sorry. I should probably get a DeviantArt, but oh, well.

I like that. Did you draw the elevation lines yourself, or do you have a program that does it?

Guyana (43.5%), Trinidad & Tobago (40%) and Suriname (37%).
Oh, yeah, the Caribbean. I forgot. Either way, though, places like Canada and Australia would have also had plurality Indian populations if laws like the White Australia law hadn't come into effect. It's interesting to hypothesize what could have happened if that wasn't the case.

All three of those are South American (well, ok Trinidad is Caribbean and S. American). :p

But yes, alternate demography is interesting, though I was under the impression the white laws in Australia were aimed at preventing large scale Indiginous Oceanians and Chinese from becoming large segments of the populace.

Very cool, and I'm highly impressed with your elevation lines. That detail is hard to do free hand. Did you use a wacom? Or scan in a pen and ink drawing?

One minor criticism, for as realistic as your topography is, the actual coastline is a bit too smooth. (I'm currently working on a hand drawn map of a 19th century Mars colony and getting the faux-shoreline to look realistic was the bane of my existence for a few days.)

Another quick (And this time last minute) Map of the Fortnight entry.

Simple but gorgeous. Love the text book look. Nice job on selectively fading the text.

What program did you use to make the map? The hash fill ins look program generated.

It's generally considered Caribbean in Canada. If you ask a Guyanese person if they're Caribbean or South American, they usually identify with Caribbean.

Maybe Metis is being used as a catchall for First Nations/Native Amerindians?

That's strange, considering that Metis means "mixed", aka mixed Indian and European ancestry. But looking more closely at the text, I see that Indians are not taken into account in the map. Must have missed that the first time:eek:.

Well, Australian food would be much better than it is.

I made a scan for the coastline (which is why it looks so simple, it was originally much smaller and than I scaled it up), and I intended to make it crinklier but right now my machine is uncooperative to fiddling with the map more (I made it on inkscape and it takes a freaking ton of memory). The elevation lines were with a wacom tablet, a tool which is really helpful for mapmaking.

Bah! I made a DA for this, just so I could host, so here's the big one which can now actually be viewed full size. Oh, and a map of dialects.
