Lasting Xin Dynasty

What POD's would allow Wang Mang's Xin Dynasty to stick? What would the new dynasty look like after some development and time to entrench itself? What would the long term consequences for China be?

Wang Mang came into power because the society was on the brink of collapse.

He fell because he couldn't save the society from its downfall.

And his post-decessor Emperor Guangwu succeeded because the society has already collapsed, no more bricks was going to fall on your head if you are already sitting on a pile of debris.

Sorry, it cannot be done.

Very poetic, but there has to be some kind of POD in which it could work. People are writing TLs about Rome surviving the rebellion of Odoacar, or Byzantium surviving Mehmed II's siege. Wang Mang established the beginnings of a very progressive and efficient state. Given better skills with foreign policy, and more shrewdness in regards to the nobility, I think Xin could have survived.

Wang Mang made a lot of really stupid mistakes.

One complete howler: Proclaimed an overhaul of of official salary system - and pending its implementation, stopped the Han dynasty salaries. All officials were completely unpaid trough the 14 years of Xin dynasty!

Could Wang Mang have survived just by making a few less mistakes?
