Jeremy Thorpe loses in 1970

What if Thorpe loses his seat in 1970? Who would lead the Liberals, maybe an early Steel leadership?

Would they be successful under Steel leading up to a 1974 election?

Maybe, he was bit as entertaining or charsimatic. Obviously it butterflies, or at least reduces effect of the dog shooting scandal.

Plus his Scottish accent made him seem classless?

Query does Thorpe try to get job back on regaining seat in 74 which would be very likely?

Pardoe or Hooson?

I think that John Pardoe would have a good chance of the leadership though Grimond would support Steel. Emlyn Hooson might well run and win. He got three votes in '67. Thorpe would probably run again in '74 and win N. Devon back.
