Jack Kemp vs Al Gore (2000)

Who would have won the 2000 election?

  • Jack Kemp

    Votes: 20 45.5%
  • Al Gore

    Votes: 24 54.5%

  • Total voters
    44
Let's say in this alternate 2000 election, Jack Kemp, a long recognized Republican decides to run and secures the Republican presidential primary, thus becoming a candidate to face off Al Gore? How would he have performed? Could he had beaten Gore? Keep in mind, Kemp is native to the Mid-Atlantic region which could make the race challenging to Gore. So does he have a shot at winning?

Kemp was a free market conservative with libertarian social sensibilities. He was for minority outreach, engaging with blue collar workers and organized labor, and women.

If he picked a VP like Liz Dole or JC Watts, he'd strengthen his play as a candidate for conservative social change (a bit of an oxymoronic statement) but might alienate social conservatives. Watts would be a good VP pick though given his social conservatism.

It would in part depend on the primaries and his personal performance. How long and messy are the primaries? I don’t see him clearing the field or having strong backing from a specific constituency.

For his personal performance, he was handicapped and in part didn’t go very far IOTL because he was seen as doing very poorly in the ‘96 VP debate. Gore was seen as a sharp and almost savage debater who easily beat Kemp that year.

I think Gore wins even more of the popular vote and the electoral collage is not close at all.

Based on Gore winning the debates and Kemp coming off too fiscally conservative
