Okay, I finished the Conquered Place, so here you are.
The Conquered Place by Robert Shafer: The United States has been fighting an unnamed Enemy (though it's obviously the Soviets) that controls Eurasia, Australasia and Africa for about six years. Currently, the Enemy also occupies the western half of North America up to the Mississippi River, while the "Free Territory" holds on to the rest of the Americas. The novel concerns an Allied soldier who is infiltrated into Center City, Ohio (possibly an analogue for Carton, Ohio) to rescue an American scientist vital to the Allied war effort. However, he finds that the Resistance cell he meets up with isn't all that interested in helping him unless it coincides with their own interests, and the scientist has his own ideas of how things should be. Not a great novel, but interesting in its own right, and a nice description of an occupied city. Another Alibris book.
