If the Norse Vikings had raided Japan how much success would they have had?

If at the height of their power the vikings searching for fabled riches in the far east ventured out to raid Japan. What kind of fight would they have found themselves in?

800s The Yamato state was getting it's butt kicked by Ainu cousins north of present day Tokyo.

Vikings would set up bases on Hokkaido. It is the land of the Ice and Snow where the the midnight sun and the hotsprings blow.

They would hammer them like gods.
They would drive their ships to these new lands, and since the Yamoto military is based on the Tang army. The green forests would whisper tales of gore, and provided they had the numbers, the vikings would end up the overlords.

If not, Vahalla would be coming.

And Shinto-esqe shrines to Odin would be cool.

I mean the Vikings were good at navigating rivers, so in their journies, in the Caspian, they hear about lands further and seek to explore them. It is not entirely farfetched, maybe it becomes a large multi-ethnic raid? It still is really implausible. They would have to land in Persia then sail around India, through the straits of Malacca and then sail up towards Japan somehow. Unless we start with something like Viking Okinawa as some kind of base, again really farfetched.

To get there the Norse would have had to conquer half of Eurasia and/or a string of staging posts from Iberia to West Africa to the Cape to India to Malaya and Taiwan.

Any Norse Vikings capable of doing all that could clearly stomp on Japan even if the Japanese had Superman fighting for them.

The band of brave men on viking so far east, or so far west, would be a very small group. Even if this group with vikings were highly succesfull, they would have little impact on the course of the world.

A enjoyable series of books Gonji: the Deathwind trilogy if you can find it. https://www.amazon.ca/Gonji-Blade-East-Deathwind-Trilogy/dp/1434445828

Viking mother, Japanese father, exiled from Japan in 16th century Europe a fantasy with magic. The o.p. reminds me of this.

Have to agree this needs to be in a.s.b. for this to happen, a few may make it there, but far more profitable targets before there. Otherwise they do some damage, but no more than nuisance raids considering the time to get there.

If going to ASB you could IOST Vikings from Ireland or the Danelaw to Hokkaido. Another option would be a group of Norse pagans from time of Harald Bluetooth

A fight with various Mediterranean people, then a fight in Egypt - maybe they’re really lucky and the Canal of the Pharoahs is currently dredged out - then a fight with red sea pirates, then a fight with more arab pirates, then Persians, then various Indians, then SE Asians, then the Chinese, then Japan...

And somehow, they win all these fights without overloading their longships with plunder. Or deciding the vast wealth they plunder by the time they get to Egypt just isn’t going to cut it.

Hey guys this is easy! The Vikings enter the Barents Sea then (for no good reason) pass through the Kara Strait into the Kara Sea then the Laptev Sea then the East Siberian Sea then they find the Chuck E Cheese and check out at the Bering Strait proceed southwest until they reach the Kuril Islands which will lead them to the promised land.

There would've been a short and bloody fight between the leader of the expedition and the rest of his men when they mutiny against his insane leadership, then they turn back and take some loot from some Russian villages on the way. Japan is absurdly far, nobody in Europe would've heard of it, and it's stupid to even bother going so far when the richest kingdoms in the world are closer and more accessible for trade, and Japan was not a particularly rich or important country in this time period.

Plenty.

They just need Hagar the Horrible's Tardis On A Longboat that allows him to raid a place, be gone for weeks, and somehow be back in time for dinner - well, except he sometimes stops off in the tavern.

You know, a phone booth is long but vertical, their longboat is wider but probably has about the same dimensions yet is horizontal... yeah, I can see it. Sadly, I don't know enough about Japanese anime to make any jokes about who he encounters, so I'm going to make a joking reference to modern day and suggest that with all of the Japanese electronics they will find it a breeze because they will just sneak in and raid the castles while all the guards are preoccupied watching cat videos on their smart phones.

(I could do more with their pets or other characters, or throw in other comic strips, but don't want to hog the fun, y'all can do more if you want.)
