The band of brave men on viking so far east, or so far west, would be a very small group. Even if this group with vikings were highly succesfull, they would have little impact on the course of the world. If at the height of their power the vikings searching for fabled riches in the far east ventured out to raid Japan. What kind of fight would they have found themselves in?

It's crazy, but now I want to know too.

Yes, but here's the twist:

There would've been a short and bloody fight between the leader of the expedition and the rest of his men when they mutiny against his insane leadership, then they turn back and take some loot from some Russian villages on the way. Japan is absurdly far, nobody in Europe would've heard of it, and it's stupid to even bother going so far when the richest kingdoms in the world are closer and more accessible for trade, and Japan was not a particularly rich or important country in this time period. If at the height of their power the vikings searching for fabled riches in the far east ventured out to raid Japan.
