A revolution was coming; the Iranian regime was irredeemably rotten and propped up on bayonets and terror. Khomeini led the clerics to hijack the Revolution, but as a person he wasn't vital; Ali Shariati did most of legwork, and if Khomeini is not around then some other charismatic Islamist fills the void.
