Historical GIS data archives for map drawers

How many of you use GIS programs like QGIS and ArcGIS to draw your maps? I use QGIS for accuracy, and then export to SVG for work in Inkscape.

Anyways, while there is a lot of F/OSS data out there for modern country boundaries, there's not much for historical boundaries so I was thinking we could make a shared archive of historical country shapes to share that we could easily drop into our own maps.

Anybody interested?

I always use GiS softwares in all my maps. Here's a shapefile of the boundaries for the German Empire

The same site has a few other historical shapefiles and, pergaps more importantly, georeferenced maps

That's one of the places I was thinking of when when I said there aren't many. :-D
