2. Bush struggled with the mantle of Reagan's successor and lost in 1984
3. Mondale tried to finish Carter's attempts to bring peace to the Middle East. The stress caused him to have a career ending stroke in 1987.
4. Ferraro led through the US though Desert Storm and masterminded the capture of Saddam in 1992. She didn't seek re-election.
5. Gore led the US through a boom in the economy but fought running battles with the Republican dominated senate
6. Dole capitalised on disillusionment with the Democrats and won in 2000. Following 9/11 he in his own words "unleashed hell" on Afghanistan and supposedly watched Bin Laden's execution live
7. McCain's period was dominated by economic woes and a more belligerent Russia
8 The Americans People's candidate snatched a close win. Sanders seeks a more socialist agenda.
