From the doctor with love: Vladek Sheybal is the third doctor

The Third Doctor era (1970-1974)

    Vladek Sheybal (1970-1974)

The producers of doctor who had considered a few people for the role of the third doctor which included: Ron Moody (who played fagin in the 1968 version of Oliver), John Le Mesurier (who played Seargent Wilson in dad's army) and Jon Pertwee (who would later play worzel gummidge), after the actors previously considered turned it down, one of the producers suggested Vladek Sheybal, who they saw in a few James bond movies. Sheybal was the first actor to play the doctor who wasn't born in Britain, as he was Polish.

Sheybals doctor was very formal, as he would be seen in his episodes wearing a tuxedo, with the occasional addition of an opera scarf. He was a very serious doctor as well, rarely making any jokes, future doctors would describe him as knowing the most languages (a reference to how Sheybal had known several languages himself) a great chess player, and the most intelligent, in contrast, the first doctor called him an upperclass twit. During this doctors time on earth, he had started to assimilate in the British higher class, he bought a country manor, drove around in a roadster named bessie, and was seen enjoying more higher class activities such as golf, opera and being at dinner parties. One of his main enemies was the master (played by Peter Cushing), other enemies was the daleks, cybermen, ice warriors, and ogrons. His companions were Liz Shaw (Caroline John), Jo Grant (Gabrielle Drake)[1], and Sarah Jane Smith (April Walker). His final adventure (named the final game) saw him battling the master for one last time. This story was written with the intent to write the master out of the show permanently, but it didn't stick.

[1] Apparently Katie Manning was casted as Jo because of a recommendation from Jon Pertwee, since Jon Pertwee isn't cast, Katy Manning isn't cast as Jo then, in her place is Gabrielle Drake, who was considered for the role, also Gabrielle Drake played Jo in Guajolotes Phil won't leave his room Timeline

    Introduction
  • Inspired by a mention of Vladek Sheybal on the wonderful phil won't leave his room TL, I'm going to ask the question of what if Vladek Sheybal was the third doctor. POD: Jon Pertwee turns down the role of the third doctor, causing the producers to eventually cast Vladek Sheybal as the third doctor.

    The Fourth Doctor era (1974-1979)

    Graham Crowden (1974-1979)

He was one of the actors first considered for the fourth doctor, when he was asked, he originally only wanted to stay for 1 season, but was then convinced to stay for three, he then decided to stay on for 2 more seasons. All together he stayed from Season 12-16

This doctor was an older scientist type of doctor, he wouldn't do much action during his era. During this era, they started to move away from the UNIT Stories, and went more towards gothic stories, this caused the Crowden era to be a more popular era. His companions were Sarah Jane, Harry Sullivan [1], Leela, and Crystal. George Gallicio was the producer during the fourth doctors entire era

[1] ITTL, since an Older actor played the fourth doctor, the need for an action man during his era is prevalent, Harry stays on for four Seasons, leaving in Season 15 after being introduced in The Giant Robot (ITTLs Robot)
