FPTP Denmark

Opening Post
  • So this idea is not exactly something new. But it hasn't been done for my own country. Denmark used to use FPTP until it was changed between 1915-1920, but I thought it'd be interesting to see what parliamentary districts might look like today. I am basing this on parishes, because to my knowledge that's the smallest administrative divisions for which population numbers are published.

I'm dividing it by landsdele (provinces) which OTL serve as multi-member electoral districts. The seats per landsdel are as follows:

    Østjylland - 27
    Byen København - 23
    Sydjylland - 22
    Nordjylland - 18
    Vest- og sydsjælland - 18
    Københavns omegn - 16
    Fyn - 15
    Nordsjælland - 14
    Vestjylland - 13
    Østsjælland - 7
    Grønland - 2
    Færøerne - 2
    Bornholm - 2
    For 179 seats in total.

Eastern Zealand (which is west of Copenhagen) traditionally consisted mostly of small towns in addition to Roskilde. With the expansion of Copenhagen's metropolitan area, this has changed, with the eastern coast now being densely populated, resulting in previous towns transforming to larger sizes.

Western and Southern Zealand consists of the majority of the island of Zealand as well as the islands of Lolland and Falster. Most of the area is relatively low density, having a number of relatively small cities which most of the districts are named after. The area contains the Great Belt bridge, as well as the cliffs of Møn and Stevns.

Fyn (Funen) contains the nation's 3rd largest city, Odense, which has 5 whole districts. It also contains other smaller cities and towns and a lot of islands in its southern sea. The island generally leans slightly right outside of Odense.

I've used an ad hoc inset for Odense. If anyone knows of a good way of making those (i.e. zooming in with inkscape) I'd appreciate to know how.

Eastern Jutland is the largest province in the country and roughly corresponds to the old county. In the north is Randers and the Djurs peninsula. In the center of the area is Aarhus, the second largest city in the country. Its metropolitan area has 10 out of the areas 27 districts. The remaining, interior part of the area is relatively rural, except for the three cities of Horsens, Silkeborg and Skanderborg.

Northern Jutland consists of multiple distinct parts. In the north is the island of Mors as well as the northern island, which consists of Thy in the west and Vendsyssel in the east. In the middle of the Limfjord is the country's 4th largest city, Aalborg, while south of this is Himmerland and the Mariager fjord. While there are some cities, most of the region is rather rural.

While the Faroe Islands by law is an autonomous territory of Denmark, it has full parliamentary representation. Like in OTL, the Faroes are constitutionally assigned two seats. The islands along with Greenland, are one of the most sparsely populated areas in the Danish realm, with Thorshavn being the only large settlement. The main political parties in Denmark do not contest the elections in the Faroe Islands. Instead, local parties do.

Similar to the Faroe Islands, Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom, constitutionally assigned two seats in parliament. Greenland is one of the most sparsely populated places in the world, with only Antarctica and neighboring Nunavut having a smaller population density. Like the Faroe Islands, only local parties contest elections, with those parties overwhelmingly being left-wing and pro independence.
