Got this in mail-my subscription copy.F&SF for Sept(?) 2005.Has an AH story by Richard Mueller about an Italy an a pope Alexander VI.Certain technological inventions thanks to Davinci and others are allowed including a primitive computer!Dominus Novus-where are you.There is a longish story about beginning magic.Won't spoil this one.This may BE either AH or parallel world.Go and read.
