It looks like the route of De Soto's expedition came fairly close to the site of the Georgia Gold Rush around Lumpkin County. What if De Soto had discovered the gold or met with Natives who discovered the gold? How would this have changed Spanish interests in the region?
It could possibly see Spanish settlement along the Georgian Coast and expanded attempts at gaining access to the interior. There were a few abortive Spanish and French attempts at colonization in the 1500s.
