Business Plot successful

What would the history of the US be if FDR was overthrown by a Big Business coup? Will Capitalism be seen as an evil?

I have been hoping someone would test this.

I doubt capitalism will be discredited since that sort of thing happened quite often in 20th century. The big question is how Americans would respond to the coup. It could potentially lead to a second civil war with several states refusiong to recognize the new Regime.

Would the coup have foreign support and from which nations?

Better yet, would the people, army, and so on throw off the yoke of freedom and democracy in favor of a fascist regime?

Remember that the American populace was then armed somewhat better than even now since full auto weapons were only recently illegal and the Army was considerably less numerous and sophisticated than even in WWII. There were also lots of WWI veterans around. Should push come to shove state militias will be formidable opponents even to the regular army.

Who commands the coup. Some businessmen were very respected, some were hated. There were also prominent figures, Lindbergh comes to mind.

The key mistake in the OTL was bringing was bringing Marine General Smedley Butler into the conspiracy. They banked on his knbown dislike for the regime. However his true hatred was for the interventionist imperialism of the US which he was deeply shamed to have taken part in. A leftist professor I had at univeristy described him as the only American Miilitary leader for whom she believed deserving of respect. So for it to succeed Butler has to kept out.

Without the safety valve of a democracy all the ideologies are going to be fighting for a piece of the power. Communism or Socialism would gain a large boost in popularity, especially in the urban north. Populism and Fascism would rise mostly in the south. The army would probably mostly support Fascist movements, as loyalty to the removed democratic government would make allying with the capitalists unpalatable, and the general right leaning would make an alliance with socialists unpopular too.

Hoover and the FBI would probably strike out on their own...

Minorities, especially in the south would lean more towards the left, even more so with the South contesting for power. Anarcho-Capitalists would get the support of the mob and mafia, and definitely would have the cash-on-hand advantage.

It'd be like the infighting in Europe during the Interbellum and the reprisals after the war. Japan would take advantage of the situation and scrap the Washington treaty. Might even see if they can seize the Philippians while we're distracted.

With Europe divided between the three ideologies, there's very little they could do to stop the fighting and would likely fan the flames.

No matter how it turns out though, America would be extremely isolationist afterwards. The war in Europe would go along without American intervention, and America would be unable to enforce an oil embargo against Japan.
