Al Gore, Senator from Tennessee. And, he hoped, future President of the United States. Sure, Gore faces several obstacles. Candidates more charismatic than himself, his increasingly liberal views. But he certainly felt he had a chance. So it was that Senator Al Gore Sr. of Tennessee gathered friends, family, and a large crowd of supporters in Nashville, where on June 5th, 1959, he declared that he would run for the Presidency of the United States.

Meanwhile, another man, this one a Republican, was also mulling a potential run for the Presidency. Senator Prescott Bush, who had helped form the Union Banking Corporation before he ran for the Senate in Connecticut. Speaking with family and advisors, Senator Bush ultimately made the announcement that he would seek the Presidency.
