Another Malaysia what if

It is more than one year since the Lahad Datu incident occured. Now, what if Jamalul Kiram wasn't stupid enough to cause the incident? Or, what if he was detained by the Philippine authorities for trying to start a revolt?

I don't think it has something to do with stupidity. The sultan of sulu has a valid private grievance against Malaysia. Although it was a mistake to use violence to air their grievances. Jamalul Kiram is a dying old man without the financial capacity to hire and equip 235 armed soldiers for an expedition. The only financial capability that we know about the sultan is the US$1,710 paid to him yearly by the Malaysian government for the rent of Sabah. So in sense, we can say that someone else financed that expedition that would want a rift between Philippines, Malaysia, the ongoing peace process, and the peace in the region.

It would be bad to detain someone who is about to die and when you know he doesn't have the financial capacity to do so even though he is the sultan of sulu and claims he sent those soldiers. He probably was just the fall guy or the frontman to take all the heat.

Prosecuting him will take time which he doesn't have a bundle of, 7 months after the standoff.

Philippine prosecution is like the USA. Innocent until proven guilty.

Going back to your question, if this didn't happen, the financial backer who wanted chaos would just hire another bunch of thugs to do it.

If it was a mistake to use violence, then he should be stupid?
And the wikipedia article about the incident said that the 'Sultan' was about to be arrested, was that true?

The Sulu culture has always been attached to violence. It is been like that since ancient times. They are totally unattached to Malaysian and Filipino culture of peace. The Americans and the Spanish had to learn it the hard way. So it is like comparing Spartan culture with Athenian culture of seeing things.

You must understand also that Sabah is their private property. So in a sense, you can say that your house is being rented by the Malaysian government but they refuse to pay an increase in rent.

If you do arrest him, will his lifespan even reach any court hearing?

The issue you should be asking is how to stop the violence from happening - stop the financial backer. That is all you need to do. Who is that group/person, know one knows for sure.
