All The Way With Adlai: Democratic Victory in 1952

Ike's gonna beat anybody, so he can't be in the election. Let's say his ticker keeps him out of the race.

It's Stevenson/Sparkman vs. Taft/Knowland. Chances are the Republicans still win. Maybe have Taft or Knowland really screw up on the campaign trail.

It would be tough to beat Ike but not impossible.

Say the Nixon scandal really blows up and he's dumped for a moderate and so the conservatives get mad.

Then Ike makes some verbal gaffes that lead to people questioning if he's got what it takes to be President.

Then maybe a settlement in Korea in Sept/Oct 52.

Dewey wins in 1948, but Adlai Stevenson still wins his Gubernatorial upset. Come 1952, Dewey is saddled with Korea, he's increasingly unpopular. But at the same time the Democrats can't settle on a candidate. The party leaders aren't going to allow a Kefauver is not going to be the nominee. Adlai emerges as the consensus candidate at the convention ala otl. Stevenson defeats the unpopular Dewey in the general election. I know, it's convergent to a fault. But having Stevenson beat Taft is hard, having him beat Ike is essentially impossible. With Dewey in the White House, Stevenson isn't saddled with the fatal combination of incumbent fatigue and a running as the standard bearer of the party that is also represented by a highly unpopular incumbent President.

1. The Nixon Scandal blows up more than in OTL.
2. Eisenhower's health issues appear during the campaign
3. The McCarthy attacks on George C. Marshall go too far and provoke a public spat between him and Eisenhower.
