Since the 1850s, engineers have been experimenting with powered lighter-than-air flight, essentially balloons with steering and propulsion. Like other early aeronautical experiments, the trial-and-error period was lengthy and hazardous. Dirigibles (with internal support structures) and blimps (powered balloons) were filled with lifting gases like hydrogen or helium, intended for many uses, from military and research to long-distance passenger service. The growth of the airship suffered numerous setbacks, including the famous Hindenburg disaster in 1937, and never developed into a major mode of travel. Despite the challenges, more than 150 years later, a number of airships are still in use and development around the world as cargo carriers, military platforms, promotional vehicles, and more. I don't understand the reasons for it, but I do know that airships are awesome.

I think that is the reason for it.

I must admit, I was guilty of extrapolating the WWI German use of zeppelins as rudimentary bombers to include a gratuitous scene of George V staring at them from Buckingham Palace at one point:eek:
 
I don't get the AH.com fascination with airships.

They're large, graceful symbols of a bygone age of romance and high culture. Like giant, flying Winston Churchills.

I've got a few friends who grew up in Brooklyn in the 1930s and saw the Hindenburg come overhead at low altitude at least once. They described it blotting out the sky and taking about a minute to pass in front of the sun, before the big swastikas came into view (one of the friends was a German-born Jew whose family moved out in the 1920s, so you can imagine how he felt about that ugly mark on the ship).

I don't get the AH.com fascination with airships.

Symbols of a bygone era. Romanticizing the past.

And to me at least, it would have been nice if they had survived in some niches. Unlike an airplane, you are effectively space unlimited, and you can walk around. Probably at least 5 times faster than a ship, and you don't have to go around many land features. Slow enough I can appreciate the terrain. High enough up that I can see more than from a train.

I remember flying out of Milan and seeing the Alps. I would have dearly loved the chance to take a airship from around Venice to Milan so I could have a few hours to see the Po Valley and Alps from a thousand feet or so up in the air. Have enough space to stretch my legs, and maybe eat a small meal.

Or for another example, an airship could be great way to see the coast of Alaska as one goes from Seattle to Anchorage. Or see Greenland from Iceland. When you go at a 150 knots or so, you have a chance to get to some remote locations overnight, then do a day of sight seeing at slow speed, then go back the next day. Antarctica from New Zealand is actually doable.

But alas, OTL did not go that way due to the orgy of violence of the World Wars.

To be gratuitous it would need to be unjustified, but you can justify *anything* with airships, as far as I'm concerned! :D

I had the physically impossible sight of being able to see an airship bombing the London Docks from Buckingham Palace;)
 
Hydrogen has a tendency to burn up and helium is just too rare. It's not an alternate history question, it's more like alternate physics.

And I don't know of any airship crashes that were caused by hydrogen fires, but plenty of crashes caused by petrol fires.

Well the Hindenburg was caused by hydrogen (sure the trigger wasn't the hydrogen itself, but that's academic).
