AHC/WI: A Croatian dominated Yugoslavia

You could say that the SFRY during Tito tried to do so, only keeping the illusion it's dominated by Serbia by keeping the capital in Belgrade. Many of the CPY higher-ups were Ustashe too. Plus the borders (copy paste ottoman Bosnia and claim it as an ethnic republic? Anyone who believes that wasn't some sort of a deliberate attempt to destabilize everything is a loon imo)

Not uniting the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs (and rename it Yugoslavia) with Serbia and Montenegro would help. That makes the Croatian portion of the population much higher.

Take a look at the demographics of Yugoslavia in 1918. The Serbs are the biggest percentage (~39%), with Croats second (~24%). Without either Montenegro or the Kingdom of Serbia, Croats make up a much larger percentage.

From there, you need to stack the government of *Yugoslavia with Croats, possibly in coalition with Slovenes - you have a shared religion (Catholicism) to help out there.

IOTL, Yugoslavia was effectively the successor state to the Kingdom of Serbia, so it is hard for it not to be dominated by Serbs.

Simple.
State of SHS is not united with Serbia after WW1. That would require different WW1 post-war situation (stalemate in late 1917, Austria-Hungary still collapse, weaker Italy).

State of SHS was renamed into the Republic of Yugoslavia with its capital in Zagreb. Over time, the state becomes a federal republic. After the war, Serbia unites with Montenegro in the Kingdom of Serbia-Montenegro. Vojvodina remains part of Hungary.

Clever, but I think this is kind of cheating since it isent "Yugoslavia" in the sense of the country we think of. Another easy way to get the whole of historical Yugoslavia to be Croat-dominated might be to extend the length of both WW I and WW II and have AH, Bulgaria, and the Free State adopt stronger Anti-Serb policies that result in land confiscation, interethnic violence, ... Nazi like stuff (nervous cough), with the interwar period also being one of economic downturn. This would not only reduce Serb ethnic percentage, but make Croatia the nation's industrial-economic center.

But, this is not Yugoslavia in OTL borders. Croatian domination in OTL Yugoslavia is almost impossible to achive. There are more then double Serbs compared to Croats, Serbs are spread throughout the country from Dalmatia to Bulgaria. The only homogeneous parts of the state are Slovenia and somewhat Macedonia.

I really do not see a way for Croatians to dominate in any kind of Yugoslavia that has anything approaching OTL borders. Posters before me have mentioned SHS, but that is not Yugoslavia, not really. Hard truth is that any state that wishes to call itself Yugoslavia has to have both Croatia and Serbia within it, they are the two dominant South Slav peoples, Yugoslavia can exist without Slovenia or Macedonia, but not without Croatia and Serbia forming a part of it.

Of course, we have seen what happens when you bring Croats and Serbs together in a single state. We are our own worst enemies, no outside threat is as dangerous as the forces that existed in both Yugoslavias, Croatian separatism and Serbian nationalism are very powerful and dangerous things, as we have seen these past 80+ years.

Like others have said, having a surviving SHS and calling it "Yugoslavia" would be the best bet, as Croats would utterly dominate that state.

But if you want to include Serbia and Montenegro you need some extreme measures. First, you need a CP victory that both results in the collapse of Austria-Hungary and cripples Italy's ability to snatch up territories from the collapsing state (any Italian defeat in WWI could do), and then you need Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria to go use really extreme measures in keeping the Serbs down (yes, even more extreme than OTL) so that Serbia is utterly hollowed out demographically.

There is no Yugoslavia without Slovenia and Macedonia, but extended Serbia with Croatian minority. The Serbs would be the majority in that state, since Muslims and Montenegrins were considered to be Serbs, not separate nations. Slovenia was an important part of Yugoslavia because it made the balance between the western and eastern parts of the state as most developed part of country.

On one hand, with a Nazi victory you could plausibly have the Nazis hand over Serbia to their loyal Croatian Utashe puppet. On the other hand, just thinking about what could happen there makes me feel gross and sad inside.

Within the OTL Borders, you'd likely need some very nasty circumstances to happen to the Serbs or for the Croats to start popping out kids like mad.

Alternatively, maybe you could get Slovenes and Bosniaks to identify as Croats somehow.

That wouldn't be Yugoslavia then, but Greater Greater Croatia.

That was the idea during the NDH. Eventually the Muslims would be just that, except Croatian, and all the Slovenes the Germans planned to expel from "Untersteiermark" were to become Croatian.

As the title says. How could we get a Yugoslavia dominated by Croatia, instead of by Serbia?
The Croatian lands somehow become far more industrialized durring Austro-Hungarian rule, then it, rather than Slovenia is the centre most developed portion, and unlike the Slovenes the Croats would actually have enough demographic strength to throw their economic weight around.
