This kind of thing would probably shatter the two party system: you'd have a progressive Republican party made up of a mix of Western Progressives, upscale intellectuals, and Ike/Dewey eastern moderate types; a southern dominated Democrat party that is largely at a more isolationist, populist middle; and a conservative party of those that think the Republicans are too far left but the Dems are too southern dominated

Not really. That's honestly how's both major parties were for a very long time. They both had Progressive and Conservative wings. They generally divided along other issues, like tariffs, immigration and foreign intervention (excluding the Caribbean, Central and South America. Both parties considered that our exclusive playground). The Progressive/Conservative divide between the parties is actually a fairly recent thing
